Sedona Hyatt Pinon Pointe review

Hi emd and anyone else who was curious about a current review of the new Hyatt vacation club in Sedona. Most of what I can tell you is that we (3 adults, 2 children) had an amazing stay. We had a 2 bedroom suite at the $165 rate and it was beautiful and in excellent condiiton. Obviously all appliances are new, and the washer/dryer with 2 small boxes of Tide came in handy because we experienced torrential rain on Monday 4/5/04 after (luckliy) we returned from our 9am Pink Jeep Tour.

If you want to sit through their presentation, Hyatt will also offer a $100 credit usable on retaurants and spa stuff. We did not have enough time to take advantage of this so I don't recall all of the options for spending the $100.

The "vacation club" was nice enough to make us consider the purchase. The only complaints are the slowness of housekeeping (and no English understood once they showed up at 5pm) and that the floors between the units are terribly thin considering this is brand new construction. Not the walls but the floors. I was surprised and disappointed by this. Only other negative was that our lower level unit felt dungeony but this could have been due in part to lack of sunshine!

NOTE: If you rent a studio, you will not have a view, they are all in the back with an interior garden pathway view. If you rent a 1 bedroom, you should have a lovely view of the red rocks and an expansive patio. The 1 bedroom also has the gorgeous master bath with separate jacuzzi tub. PS the bottle opener is by the jacuzzi in the wine cooler. We did not find this until after we bought a corkscrew! If you rent the 2 bedroom as we did, you have it all.

The location is amazing if you wish to be in the middle of town. I can't imagine that this large area of land was available undeveloped. I wish I could remember what was here before. You can walk to all "uptown" restaurants. Construction at the hotel did not bother us and centered on the shopping area. A Starbucks is now open in the shops along with a few other stores. The pool area is very nice with 2 large hot tubs which were great even in the rain. The gym has a great array of equipment and an amazing view. Is attached to a clubhouse and spa area, with fireplace, games and books.

We had a mediocre dinner at Oaxaca, don't rush there. Breakfast across the steet at the Orchards was fine. The bbq place in Uptown was an awesome rainy day post jeep tour spot. We were in town for a small wedding so we had a nice pre-nuptial dinner at Enchantment's fancy restaurant on the rainy night, so views were not visible but we have been there in the past and know how breathtaking it is in Boynton canyon. The sun came out for a beatutful noon wedding ceremony on the rocks with Cathedral Rock in the background, followed by a luncheon at Javelina Cantina which was much tastier mexican than Oaxaca.

We also saw Amara Resort where our friends who were getting married stayed. Beautful setting down by the creek in the middle of uptown. Again hard to imagine how this land was available. Very "New York sophisticated" feel to Amara, not sure if that is what this east coast girl wants in Sedona, but our friends felt the service was excellent and food very good at Amara. Amara felt very adult oriented, not family friendly which is fine if you are aware of this before you go there. Major drawback is the pool is teeny tiny, so do not go there with kids. You will feel terrible that they will drive the other guests crazy. And most of the guests looked like they did not want to see anyone's kids.

Hope this is helpful and not too long. We moved down to the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort and Casino in Phoenix after Sedona, and were really happy with this new resort also. Feel free to ask any questions.

Edye: thanks so much. I have a friend who now has a vacation home at Junipine resport in Oak Creek Canyon about 15 min. from Sedona, so I am lucky not to need any more rooms in Sedona. But so many people have asked on here about the Hyatt Pinon, and that is why I asked for a trip report. As a matter of fact, while you were gone last week someone asked about it again, and I replied to wait til Edye gets back and we'll get the scoop.
I do recall what was at the site where the Hyatt is now- it was totally undeveloped. They are paving paradise and putting it all up in Sedona. Most of the other big chain resorts are a bit more hidden and off the road as you come into Sedona, but the Hyatt is right there at the "Y" junction which is already a pretty congested area on Fridays and weekends. I have never even heard of Amara resort and never seen anyone asking about it on here either. Another new one I guess. I can't imagine a New York feel to anything in Sedona. I hope they at least made it blend in w/the environment w/the adobe colors like Enchantment and the others.
I have never had rain in Sedona in all my times there, sometimes for 10 days at a time this time of year! I'm sory you had that bad luck.

Edye, thanks for the post on the Hyatt. We have plans to stay there for one nite in May. So it's nice to know that we should have a nice room with a good view of the rock (1 bedroom).

We're also going to a wedding but in Scottsdale (at the Fairmont) so we thought it would be a great time to sneek away for a quick trip to sedona.

I had some concerns about booking the Hyatt, but figured for one night, how bad could it be. So you post makes me rest at little more easy about our decision. Thanks.

Further thoughts on Hyatt Pinon Pointe...

We stayed there for three nights in early April and I can only agree with Edye about the excellent condition of the place. We loved the southwest decor, our huge patio facing the red rocks, the hill-top pool area with beautiful sunset views. Kitchen was well equiped for cooking meals and the dining area large and comfortable.

Here are two caveats:

When I checked in, I was told that rooms (and their corresponding views) are assigned when the reservation is made. No changes could be made. I would call and ask specifically about that when you book.

They are still working out the kinks and I experienced some plumbing glitches...specifically the hot water and cold water were reversed on the laundry. Staff was most gracious about my concerns (as they were on every other occasion). Just check what's going in to the tub if you need to wash in cold.

All in all, I would love to go back and can see staying longer. My 10 y.o. daughter was ready to move in...permanently! She loved falling asleep if front of the fireplace each night!
