Seattle to LA: Pick a favorite
Does anyone have a favorite West Coast hotel/inn/b&b between those two points (coastal or inland)? Someplace especially unique, or charming, or elegant, or...well any accomodation that made a powerful impression.
We'll be flying up to Seattle and then driving down to Los Angeles in mid-August. We've made the trip before, but we're looking for a couple of wonderful places to splurge.
Any recommendations are appreciated,
Mila

We really liked the Stephanie Inn at the southern end of Cannon Beach, OR. Beautiful rooms with fireplaces and balconies overlooking the coast. Wine tastings in the afternoon (guests only).
They have a web site

Check and see if it's what you have in mind.

Wonderful!
I'm going to check these out.
We stayed at St. Orres a couple of years ago and I was thinking about returning. I was curious about the Wildflower Cottage. I can't remember which one we stayed in before. Maybe Sea Pines? In any case, I will check out the Tree House as well.
Thanks everyone!

Not everybody's pint of beer, as it were, but you might enjoy one or more of the McMenamins' establishments, especially the Edgefield in Troutdale at the west end of the Columbia Gorge (see this if you haven't yet) or the Kennedy School in Portland, or more places we haven't visited yet. Their specialty is converting old buildings (like the Multnomah Co. Poor Farm in the case of the Edgefield) into art-filled, movie-showing, beer- and wine-making, garden-festooned hotels or B&Bs - a lot of fun if you like that sort of thing. Elegant - no, funky, fun - oh yeah...

The Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, California is a very unique hotel. Each of the rooms has a differnt theme. Call ahead and see what rooms are available - the cave room and a few others tend to be very popular and get booked up rather quickly.
I'd also have to second John's recommendation for staying at the Edgefield in Troutdale. It's a great place to spend a night after visiting the Columbia Gorge. They have a pub and movie theater right on site.

We've actually been to that McMenamin's too! We went last year during the summer and had a wonderful time. I didn't enjoy having to pad down the hall to the bathroom but it was a fun, unique, relaxed place to stay. And the massages weren't bad either!
We did the "theme room" thing at the Union Hotel and Victorian Mansion. Very fun, but no real need to do more than visit the Madonna Inn.
Thanks again for the suggestions. When you only have a few nights, it's tough to make up your mind!
