Savannah Question

My husband and I were in Savannah last week, and got stumped by something.

Our map listed the "Historic District", which seemed to end at Forsythe Park. However, there was a restaurant - I think it's called Elizabeth at 37th or something like that, that we could not find on the map, even though in our Frommers book it said it was in the Historic District.

Are all those "numbered" streets beyond (south of) Forsythe Park? Is the area south of Forsythe considered "unsafe"?

I asked someone what was beyond the park, as we did not have time to walk down that way, and it started to look a little "scruffy" so we only took in the park and not beyond, and they said there were some subdivisions - one Ardsley Park - that was quite nice.

We were half seriously "looking" at real estate, and loved the historic district - but it seems anything there is out of the question at 700K+. Are there any other areas close to town with historic homes that are less expensive but still relatively safe?

HI, I'm a Savannah native. The area your talking about is the historic district...Well part of it. The HD is broken up into several districts Victorian is the best outside of downtown. The area you started to wander towards has good areas and bad.The problem areas vary depending on the block and street.Ardsley park is south of Victory dr.Yes its very nice. Visit again and move a little further outside of downtown you may find what you want.

As to Elizabeths's, the area it is in is historic, but not within the boundaries of what most counsider the "Historic District". Does that make sense? lol One day that area may come back, but it's not yet safe to walk it. You can cab to Elizabeths, which is between the Historic District and Ardsley Park.

I love Ardsley Park...we looked there at one point when we were considering buying. Houses are not the same as you might find in the historic district, nothing that resembles the townhomes that line the squares, but pretty in their own right. They are 20's and 30's era homes.

We are giving serious consideration to going back to live when DH retires, but will be looking at an area south of town called The Landings. These aren't historic, far from it, but it's a lovely area on the marsh/water/golf courses etc.

Is the area around Whitfiield Square fairly safe? I can take care of myself, but my elderly, rural-bred Dad is coming too and I worry about him

The Historic District ends south of Forysth Park. That is where the "Victorian District" starts. Yes, the area is rough and it's a shame because the homes are beautiful. Elizabeth's on 37th is in the Victorian District but is very popular. Beyond the Victorian District (South of Victory Dr) is Ardsley Park. It was the first suburb of Savannah built between 1920-1940. The homes are very cute and it's a popular area to live. To find a home in the true Historic District under $700,000 is pretty difficult. If you want to be an "urban pioneer" you can buy a beautiful victorian home in need of TLC for around $100,000. The downside - it could be next door to a crack house...
