We'll be in San Francisco one day without a car and would like to go to Saualito. What is the best way to get there from SF? We'll be staying on Lombard St. Delores

You can get a ferry from Fisherman's Wharf that will take you to Sausalito.

Kill 3 birds with one stone. Take the ferry to Sausalito as the above poster recommended. You get a good view of Alcatraz on the way over. Then after touring Sausalito, take the public bus that goes over the Golden Gate Bridge back into SF.

The ferry is the only way to go. Enjoy the views of the city.

I live in the Bay Area and I think that all the ferries at Fisherman's Wharf are the tourist kind that takes you on a Bay cruise. The regular local ferry for Sausilito leaves from the FERRY Building at the base of California street. You can get a schedule and go there and back for less than paying for a tour....unless that is what you want. Check me out on this when you arrive in SF. I think you want the quick ride over from the Ferry Bldg that does go by Alcatraz. From Lombard street you could probably also get a cab to run you across the Golden Gate Bridge as the Ferry Bldg is down one way and you will be fairly close to the Bridge. Good luck. That's the ferry we took (both ways) when we visited last Spring. We really enjoyed it, and noted how packed the boats from Fisherman's Wharf were versus ours. I think it left from "Pier One." We walked there.

The ferry is a great way to go-if it's a pretty day. In Sausalito you might consider brunch or lunch at the Alta Vista Hotel. It is an old-fashioned place(reminds me of where my grandparents might have vacationed), but the views from the terrace dining area are world-class!

I think the previous poster means the Alta Mira hotel. They do have great views, but in my opinion the food is pretty poor (it used to have a really good reputation but it's slipping lately). A restaurant I've never been to but keep hearing good things about is the Spinnaker. It sits right on the water.
