Sarasota snorkling nearby?
We have visited Sarasota several times and are still discovering new things to do.
Was wondering if there is any snorkling spots within a half hour drive?
Thanks for any advice on great beach destinations.

The west Gulf coast is just sand. There is a shallow coral reef at the mouth of Tampa Bay but you would need to have someone take you there who knew where it was. There is some scuba diving as well on submerged boats, including the Blackthorn, a carrier which was sunk after an explosion at sea that killed a few sailers.
If you have snorkle gear use them along the shoreline. You can see little fish and find nicer shells than those that wash ashore.

I used to live on Pt. of Rocks which is on Siesta Key just south of Crescent Beach. I found that a number of people snorkled around that area, probably because there were quite a lot of fish in and around the rocks. Also, it is a bit more clear than the typical sandy bottom found mostly along the gulf shore.
If you park at Crescent Beach (which is just south of the Stickey Pt. Bridge) and walk about a qtr. mile south you will get to the Pt of Rocks area.
