looking for hotel in santa monica or vicinity last week of july. anything decent for less than $300?

What hotels have you found in your searching that are less than $300? Tell us that and then we can make recommendations.

Try the Sheraton Delfina. It is a couple of blocks from the beach, and is a very nice hotel and usually less expensive than others in that immediate neighborhood.

If you are not set on Santa Monica itself, I just returned from the Inn at Venice Beach, which was a great little hotel just a block from the Venice pier. Breakfast is included, wi-fi is free, and parking is only $7/day. Ask for a room facing the courtyard, if you prefer a quiet room.

I've stayed at the Georgian for under $300 although I don't know if their rates fluctuate seasonally. But it's worth a look.

I liked the JW Marriott - I have no idea what the rate would be in July but you can score some good deals sometimes. I think people have had good success with Priceline in SM.
