Sanibel beach, while great for shelling, is not, what I would call, kid friendly. There are so many broken shells that it is almost required to wear water shoes or sandels all the time, even in the water.
I would recommend Siesta Key over Sanibel when considering children. Good shelling on Point Of Rocks, white sand that is never hot, family oriented so the town is quiet after 10 and small town atmosphere.

I recently returned from Sanibel and must disagree. It's plenty "kid friendly," and I witnessed zillions of kids enjoying the beach without those lame "water shoes" or whatever they are.
Siesta/Longboat/Lido are fine too, but don't be discouraged from going to Sanibel.
