SanDiego vacation

We are going to San Diego(our first visit) the first full week of June and are staying at the Catamaran in Mission Beach. Is this a nice place? I seem to be seeing a lot about college-age crowds (and we're not). We wanted to be on the water and this looked nice in the pictures.

It's okay, but you could do better. My advice would be to keep looking and asking around.

I live in San Diego.

Emily is right about the Catamaran. In fact I would avoid Mission Beach. It is OK but is geared to the younger crowd.

I do not know what your budget is so it is impossible to offer suggestions. There are many options. One thing that you should be aware of is the "June Gloom". That refers to the very heavy marine layer that we get during the month of June. There are days when the son barely appears. Some years are worse than others.

Our family went last year at the end of June and stayed at the Dana Marine Inn at Mission Bay. This is not a fancy place but it is on the Bay and you can rent boats right there. The pool is nice and there are other activities like shuffle board and ping pong available. The grounds were really nice to walk along the bay, too. There is not a lot of other things to do right there--you will need to drive to see much else. We enjoyed Old Town and walking around the Gas Lamp district downtown. Pizza at Sammy's is a must. Enjoy your stay.

Marsha's right. Dana Inn is not fancy. In fact, when we stayed there, the kids next door were extremely noisy and the walls were thin--we heard everything. We ended up moving to another hotel called the Bahia. It was okay, but a little bit pricey (we're Canadians) but well worth the peace and quiet.
