sandiego vacation

my wife and I will be in sandiego for 4days at the end of this month. it will be just the two of us.this is our proposed schedule. please let me know what you think
1) day 1- arrive at 1 pm, staying at hotel del coronado, going to balboa park, eating a prince of wales in hotel, relaxation
2) day 2- still at the del, coronado beach time, ferry marketplace, gondola ride @ loews, bike rental in coronado, eating at chez loma or chive
3) day 3- to the zoo (more of balboa park if time permits), check in to westgate or hotel prava downtown, horton plaza, eating and listening to jazz at croce's
4) day 4- to cabrillo national monument/point loma in am then to la jolla, checking into hotel parisi, taking in lajolla, possible kayaking, Mount soledad is questionable (time permitting), coast walk, la jolla cove, eating at brockton villa or top o cove.

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. I have never been to sandiego. thank you.

your day plans sound wonderful but why are you changing hotels so much? waste a lot of time packing, unpacking, checking in, checking out. doesn't make sense to me.

I live in Santa Monica and go to San Diego all the time and my advice would be to stay at one hotel in San Diego (either Coronado or the downtown San Diego area) because it only takes 15 minutes to get from Balboa Park or the downtown area to Coronado (and the drive over the bridge is wonderful anyway). Checking out from one hotel and checking into another is so time consuming (even if you have no luggage). I also like Old Town.

you do make a good point, veronica. But on the other hand you have to admit that it is nice when you are out on the town having a good time to be able to walk to your room without worrying about driving, traffic, or hailing cabs.

I also live north of San Diego and go there quite a bit. The city is a bit spread out, but La Jolla is, tops, 20 minutes out of the city itself. Del Coronado is a short drive from downtown, Gaslamp, etc. Cabs are quick, not overpriced, and a quick cell phone call away. Relocating to a new hotel means enduring check-in/check-out at each place, which would keep me in one property.

Maybe the perspective of people like me is skewed-- we can easily go down any time we want (and we do, 'cause San Diego is a great town!). But just kicking back at one hotel, and taking excursions here and there in a rental car, would be a lot more relaxing IMHO.

i guess that there are pluses and minuses to moving from hotel to hotel. Maybe i have been lucky, but i have never had to wait longer than 5 minutes total time for checking in and checking out. With express checkout (which most decent hotels have) you rarely have to go to the desk. also it is cool to see 3 outstanding hotels and have more information for next time. However you all have made good points that i will give considerable thought to. To me it has always been easier to simply walk back to my hotel, rather than trying to find a number for a cab especially after some suds. But i guess that is just me . I would love to hear other view points and thank you for your responses.

Well, I live in San Diego and I also thnk you should just stay in one hotel. However, if you do stay at the Hotel Prava and/or the Hotel Parisi, would you be kind enough to post a trip report? None of us seem to know anything about them. Enjoy San Diego where the temperature today go to 82!

Sure, Barbara, I would be happy to comment about Parisi and Prava. My trip is over the Easter weekend so I will post something back at this site at the end of April.

Barbara, or other SD natives, is George's at the Cove still open in La Jolla? I went there several years ago and really enjoyed the views from the patio (of the Cove, naturally), and the food was nice, and they had a pretty good wine list too!

Yes, George's at the Cove is still open and is still one of the top-rated restaurants in San Diego. It's one of my favorites and I love having a leisurely lunch on the upstairs patio.

Barbara, you have made my day!! I'm playing around with a trip to SD in June, and I think a nice drive up to LJ and lunch at George's (please let them be open for lunch!) would be suitable. For various boring reasons, we'll be staying in SD, probably in Hillcrest (cheap, centrally located, near great gobs of friends).

Yes, they'll be open for lunch, but do make reservations.

Mille125,

I would like to respond to your request for opinions on staying at two different hotels while in the San Diego area.

Although I usually stay in one hotel while on vacation, there have been a couple of occasions when I have switched hotels for reasons similar to yours. Since I travel light, the convenience of being walking distance to my hotel room and not having to drive or take cabs outweighed the minor inconvenience of packing and unpacking.

I have friends who visited the San Diego area and wanted to stay at the exclusive and pricey La Costa Resort and Spa. They couldn't afford it for four nights, though. So they spent the first two nights at Motel 6 and then switched to La Costa. A bit unconventional, but it worked for them.

Travel is a subjective experience, and each person does it in his or her own way. If you don't mind checking in and out of the two hotels, my suggestion is to stay in both Coronado and La Jolla.

Mt. Soledad has great views, so if you have time, it's worth a stop. I have taken out-of-town guests there, but it is not usually on my top ten list when I'm playing tour guide.

this message is in response to barbara's question concerning the hotels parisi and prava. Hotel parisi is awesome..........pros include outstanding service, outstanding location, superluxe bedding, great spa, very calming feng shui design........ cons include no true ocean view and no pool or restaurant (even though you can get room service).......overall excellent hotel. I give it a 9.5 rating on a 10 scale. Hotel prava is also good. Located in walking distance to the gaslamp quarter. all rooms are suites with outstanding bedding. there is one room with two balconies and a whirlpool tub with 1000 sq ft (we stayed here). very good bargain for what you get. Hotel also has no restaurant. Hotel staff is not as experienced. I give it a 7.5 rating out of 10........ but the room with a whirlpool gets a 9.5 out of ten. I want to thank everyone for their suggestions. Our trip was outstanding. We may in fact move to San Diego. Thanks again.
