San Luis Obispo, CA

Can anybody tell me what is that main airport that would serve this city? Trying to visit Cal Poly. Thanks.

If you mean an airport where cross-country flights would land, that would be LAX. If you mean an airport where a connector flight would land, San Luis Opispo should have service. If not, try Santa Barbara.

There used to be small-aircraft service to SLO from LAX and perhaps SFO. I think it was provided by United Express, but they have dropped many of these routes over the past few years. I don't know if this service still exists.

I know there are flights from LAX to Santa Barbara where you could rent a car. The cost and connecting time involved, though, might be better spent on just driving from LAX. The other option, depending on where you're coming from, is to fly into Burbank Airport and rent a car there. Burbank is much smaller, less stressful and just slightly closer to your final destination.

Yes, I tried looking into this as well for a visit to the same area. From what I understand you can only fly to LA, which makes it another 2 hour drive with traffic to get to San Luis? Too much for us so we just decided to stay in LAX proper instead.

American offers service to SBP (San Luis Obispo Airport) with American Eagle turboprops out of LAX. There are a few choices to SBA (Santa Barbara Airport), including America West through LAS.

If time is tight, flying into SLO on the turboprop service is best. If cost is an issue, you can fly into LA and drive 4+ hours (traffic can add significantly to this), or fly into San Jose and drive ~3 hours. I find the drive somewhat scenic, with interesting potential stops.

Thanks everybody. I'm just lazy enough to tell my son to cross this school off his list as it seems too hard and too expensive to get to. We'll see. Thanks again.

Don't give up! This is a great school and a wonderful area in which to live... you'll love visiting him here!

It is not too difficult to fly into SBX (San Luis Obispo) or into Santa Maria (SMX) If those don't work for you and you don't mind a 2 1/2 hour drive... fly into Fresno ( FAT.)

I agree with Moneygirl, SLO is a great school in a beautiful setting. My nephew graduated in 2002 and now has a great job in San Francisco.

I know several people who have graduated from or are current students at Cal Poly San Luis. Everyone has had really positive things to say about the school and the area.

Perhaps if we knew where you were trying to fly from we could be of more help?

Especially if your son is interested in engineering, crop science, agriculture or viticulture (?) this is a wonderful school and should not be crossed off of your list.

My DH is a grad of Cal Poly, which is a wonderful school and a gorgeous campus and surroundings. He Agrees that a prop from Santa Barb to San Louis (or a 2 hour drive) is the easiest. This town is truly fantastic and my husband had the best time of his life attending school there...I wouldnt count it out.
