San Juan Islands/ferry/passports????????

If we do NOT have passports can we get to the San Juan islands from Port Angeles without stopping at Victoria? I looked up the ferry schedule and it looks like they stop in Victoria first then the islands and you need a passport. It looks like we need to drive to Anacortes to take a direct ferry. I was hoping we could do it from Port Angeles because we will already be there. Did I read it right or is there a way??? Thank-You

I think you read it right. You can't get from the Olympic Peninsula via ferry to the San Juans without a stop (and change of ferry) on Vancouver Island.

Nope. The Black Ball ferry out of Port Angeles only goes to Victoria so you would have to get off and enter Canada then catch the Washington State ferry to Anacortes which stops in Friday Harbor (and only goes once a day at noon and takes about 2 hours and leaves from Sidney and requires you to be there 90 minutes early whereas if I remember correctly you come into Victoria (not Sidney) on Black Ball). The Canadians might let you in without a passport but the US requires a passport or border id card to re-enter. Even with a passport it would cost a lot more.

You need to drive to Port Townsend, catch the ferry there to Keystone (reservations strongly recommended 1-888- 808-7977 (in state) or 206-464- 6400, or 511, from 7 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. or online at https://business.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/reservations/ get there at least 30 minutes early even if you have reservations) then drive to Anacortes and catch the ferry there to the island of your choice. Allow for at least an hour wait time at Anacortes (no reservations taken).
