San Francisco with 1 year Old
We are planning a trip to San Francisco in late January. I am looking for suggestions on where to stay with our 11 month old baby. We will not have a car with us and will spend up to $250/night (should be pretty generous since you can get some great deals right now). I have a friend we are visiting that lives on the corner of Geary and Leavenworth, but I have been warned that is the Tenderloin and not the safest, especially with our little one. Please give me any suggestions. I am hoping for somewhere kid friendly, not tiny rooms, and above average nice. NOT cookie cutter Holiday Inn style. Thank you!!

Hello dani, you might want to check out the Villa Florence Hotel on Powell St., (half block south of Union Sq.) and see what their Jr.Suites or Suites cost. Also the Donetello Hotel on Post (just off Powell) has very large rooms. Just two thoughts off the top of my head.

With a stroller the area at and around Union Sq., is good as is going down Market St., to the Ferry Bldg., and along the Embarcadero. However in that late January will probably have rain that consequently wouldn't be workable with a little one in a stroller so you would need to use taxis unless your friend has a car. Or if you are up to it you could use Muni. There are lots of indoor places you could enjoy depending on your interest but again if it rains you would not want to walk to various places. But perhaps you already have this worked out since you didn't mention having a stroller. Best regards and wishes to enjoy SF and seeing your friend.

Yes, we will have a stroller. And we are not opposed to taxis. We will only be there a few days and will most likely meet our friends at places rather than travel to their apartment. Thanks for all the help!

I would see if you can get a room in the old part of the hotel, as it is pretty unique. I stayed there last time I was in San Francisco and love it. The one nice thing is the hotel is in union square, and is only 2 miles from Fisherman’s Wharf. I am not sure what you are planning on seeing, but if you are going to Alcatraz you might want to get your tickets in advance as they sell out pretty fast. There are obviously a variety of tours available that the hotel can suggest, but I used geogad.com and lonelyplanet.com for local free tours of San Francisco when I first went. Hope this helps, and I hope you have a good stay in the Bay!!!!
