San Francisco safety at night
I was wondering if anyone has stayed at the Hotel Britton and if it's any good. It is in the South of Market st area and I was wondering if it's safe to walk around there at night if we were to go out to dinner somewhere nearby? Also what is the weather like in San Fran in October?

Kylie, There's SOMA and then there's SOMA. If you give us an address or X street perhaps we could be more help. SOMA is currently being "gentrified" and there are some very nice places there now. I haven't heard of your hotel. The good news is that the weather will be absolutely perfect--guaranteed. In fact, we get rather bored with the weather that time of year! Less fog than during the summer but still wise to layer clothes. Enjoy your visit.

This used to be a relatively inexpensive budget type hotel in a questionable area that has recently been renovated and is now a boutique hotel in a transitioning area. I would consider the location passably do-able but hardly desirable especially at night. Ok in Daytime. They provide shuttle service toand from Union Sq but unless there is some overriding reason to stay here I would suggest small hotels such as the Chancellor , Hotel Beresford , Beresford Arms , Andrews, or my favorite location in North Beach , The Washington Sq Inn. These would all provide a much better location , especially for walking around at night. Citysearch7.com is useful for evaluating hotels in SF as they provide fairly accurate "independent" profiles on most places, worth looking at.Places suggested can all be found there. I'm sure you would survive at the Britton, but there are locations that are far,far preferable and would give you a better experience for your stay here.

I would follow Stosh's advice. There are many reasonbly priced hotels in San Francisco that are in much better locations. It is true the area you are referring to is probably much safer today than it was a few years back. However it is still somewhat seedy. In General, San Francisco is a pretty safe city to walk around in.
As Kam mentioned, October is the perfect month for visiting San Francisco. The weather is genrally warmer and certainly much clearer. However I strongly disagree about getting bored with the weather. She may get bored but we would love to have the other 11 months just like October.

Kylie, I agree with the above 2 posts. There are lots of other hotels in SF in better places and I second the suggestion for North Beach as an ideal neighborhood for walking around. And, SF Sally, it must be my Chicago past that requires a few cold cloudy days in October!! But, I agree it's wonderful here--31 days of paradise.
