North Beach Pizza, Brandy Ho's (Chinese), The Stinking Rose (Italian) and The Cheesecake Factory (2nd floor of Macy's - eat light and save room for dessert!)

Yank Sing for dim sum and Cha Cha Cha for tapas! They can order a bunch of different things to try and the atmosphere is always fun.

Also, if they are dessert eaters, Citizen Cake is great. It has an unbelievable bakery counter to drool over while you wait for your table, the food is good and the desserts are required eating.

Try North Beach in general, for Italian, of course, but also espresso bars, bakeries, etc. We also found a little place called Cafe Prague (near the intersection of Kearney and Columbus) which serves Czech food. I'm sure that's not the first thing that comes to mind, but the food is very good, and the atmosphere is small and somewhat "hip' in feel-- might be a good "real" restaurant (very reasonable prices, too)
