Mosey-
So many choices...
.Dim Sum in Chinatown is lunch/and a MUST. Many choices I like Grand Palace on Grant. I think Jackson is cross street.
. Go to North Beach for dinner one night. I like Capp's Corner. It is family style and all dinners start with minestrone and end with spamoni. The walls are plastered with historic photos, and the kids can roam around and check them all out. Then go to one of the coffee houses for a dessert on the street-side cafes.
In Japan town there are choices too. Isubuni has sushi on boats that float by, and you grab your choice as it glides by. Then walk over to Jitlada on Buchanan off Sutter and have their ice-cream and pancake dessert and the black sticky rice and mango. Oooooh my gawd are they good. Thai restaurant.
.You have to see the stinky seals at the end of pier 39. So... if you need lunch, we go to Eagle Cafe which is on upper left as you enter the Pier. But, do stop at Bubba Gumps and see the statue of Forrest Gump sitting on a bench with his "box of chocolates". Upstairs at tip of Pier. Great photo op. Go in and use the bathroom and check out the paraphanilia - the kids will love it. Rent the video before you go to sfo. The view of bay is great - the food is horrendous....
Oh, yes, go to Tiburon one day only if it is nice out,and eat at Sam's Anchor Bar - on the deck. Best hamburger and beer place.
p.s. The whole city is very "kid-friendly". Enjoy!!!

I like the suggestion of the Straits Cafe. Even in S.F., Singapore style food is not a dime-a-dozen cuisine. There are other Singapore style restaurants, but the Straits is the most approachable for a first-timer. Try the "bobo chacha" dessert - if only for the laugh-out-loud name. It's actually a pudding type dish with sweet potatoes.
Here's another idea - the Korean barbecue places on Geary in the Avenues. There must be a dozen of them out in the Richmond. Pick a place where there are hibachis set into each table. The servers bring live coals to place in the grill, then you grill your chosen menu items to your taste. Lots of little side dishes are served. I thought it was fun as a kid - yes, it was a LONG time ago - but I think the appeal still holds.

The original post could have been written by me (except we live a little further west), and while we've been to S.F., we're going again this Spring with our 8 and 5 yo restaurant-savvy kids. We appreciate all the restaurant ideas so far (especially in Cow Hollow, an area I love).
Our kids love dim sum, and are REALLY looking forward to experiencing it in San Francisco (we usually go to Yank Sing). Also, as you wander through Chinatown, it's easy to stop in for a couple of snacks or treats.
I love walking through North Beach. Kind of touristy, but lots of good restaurants (Rose Pistola is one we like), great cafes that do remind me of Italy and even gelato (always a kid-pleaser).
When our son was 5, a quick stop in several of the touristy places in Fisherman's Wharf gave him his love of fresh crab. Depending on what you pick from the takeout places, the food's not too bad and it's nice to have a quick meal once in a while.
I told my son about the sushi boat restaurant I ate a quick sushi lunch in while in SF on a business trip (without him), and now it's very high on his "must-do" list. Glad to hear there's one in Japantown (another interesting area).
Keep the suggestions coming...

Another vote for Cafe Pescadore! Very yummy with Chicken Marsala that is to die for. Right near fisherman's Wharf.
One that is nice, but yummy and a great view is Alioto's on Fisherman's Wharf. Go for lunch...must more reasonable.
Also another vote for Scoma's. They have one across the bridge in Salsalito which is a bit less crowded tna the SF one.
If it is still open...Sears in Union Square is great for breaksfast. The Palace Hotel also has a very nice Sunday Brunch...beautiful setting!!!
P.S. One attraction your kids may like is the Tactile Dome in the Exploritorium. You may already know about it...but if not I can give you a good review on it.

Unfortunately, Sears in Union Square was closed this weekend when I was there. It doesn't look like it will open again soon. There was a sign pointing half a block up to Lori's Diner.
However, IMHO, the better Lori's Diner is down the street near Powell and Market.

Sears Fine Foods went under in December. However, with some wrangling Man Kim (the guy who owns all 3 of the Lori's Diners) will take over Sears Fine Foods although it will likely be a little while before they open their doors again.
Kim's intention is to let Sears remain as it was, with a few modifications.

BayArea: Thanks for the enlightenment on Sears! Glad we will get to enjoy it again in the future!
Apparently there are now 5 Lori's Diners: three in the immediate Union Square area, one at Ghirardelli, and one at SFO. Anyone who wants an All-American experience of hamburger, fries, shake - Lori's is it!

I for one, never quite got what Sears was all about. Yea, it was a decent breakfast, like a million other typical diners or coffee shops. But I sure didn't get what all the hype was about. And I sure didn't understand why I stood in line for about a half hour to eat there. What was it about the place that I "didn't get"?
