One last question, please. I have read about Gary Danko's in Fisherman's Wharf area and have heard great things but am wondering, how hard is it to get in?
Do I need to be at my computer at midnight on the first day of the 2 month window? Or should I try calling when the reservation desk opens up on the 2 month date?
btw: Thank you so much for the great tips. We are really looking forward to our trip.

I haven't been in a few years, but Venticello is near your hotel and used to be a good choice, nice neighborhood ambience, nice food, etc. Maybe someone on Fodor's has eaten there recently? Or Google and see if there's a recent review. It's walkable from the Fairmont and would be something to consider if one day you've toured so much that you just want an early evening and then off to bed. Not seafood though.

We just called ahead of time for Gary Danko, but I live here so had some flexibility about nights. You might see if the Fairmont will do this for you--but check now.
