We're setting out for SF in early February with an 11 year old and 9 year old for four nights. My wife and I have stayed at the Monaco a few years ago and loved the hotel and the location. Rooms are kind of small though for all of us. Any recommendations. Really don't want to spend more than$250 per night. Looking for large rooms or reasonably priced suites. Many thanks.

My suggestion is totally unlike the Monaco, but if I was staying with kids I would prefer the neighborhoods which are more kid friendly by my standards. The Pacific Heights Inn looks like an average motel from the outside. By SF room size standards etc. I found the deal at PHI coupled with the Pacific Heights neighborhood a double winner in every way. We stayed a whole week and it provided a fully equipped kitchen and sleeping areas. It was like having a small apartment for our entire SF vacation. SF is SMALL in area; you can get anywhere quickly and easily by walking or public transportation. I would NOT want to stay in Union Square area or in Fisherman's Wharf area with children. It's too touristy and the beggars were beyond aggressive in both places. I know many would argue with me-but I am small and I had homeless and in one case also his dog, grab on to me while walking. He said Scout needed something to eat and I thought it might be me for awhile there.

SF has its own special charm and the Victorians etc. in Pacific Heights and into Cow Hollow area really share it too. We did all the side trips and traveled to Napa/ Sonoma for wine tasting. Pacific Heights Inn will let you put your car FREE where you can see it. You have a very small establishment with extremely personal and cooperative owners right on the premises. It was recommended to me by a San Francisco native. I got the deal on line for $129 a night. Make sure you request a kitchenette. If you never use the kitchen, it will still be a great place for your kids to sit/ read / whatever while you are getting ready to go out. Wine glasses, corkscrew and china are waiting for use. No need to ask. Union Street shopping and excellent restaurants a very short 2 blocks away.

my family greatly enjoyed the Hotel Nikko this summer . We stayed there for $159 a night and were upgraded to club level which was very nice. I would definitely check this hotel out. My kids are 14 and 12, and they liked it. A good location close to Union Square, and I don't think I've ever had better service in a hotel. Rooms are probably bigger than the Monaco, the decor is modern.

For pricing check a copy of the San Francisco Chronicle. You can sometimes find good weekend rates in that paper that they promote to get the local people into town and they don't run those ads out of town. Or ask the hotel you call if they are running a "local" promotion. This has worked for me a few times in popular cities. Just a thought.

I would suggest staying at renaissance parc 55, its located at union square, we are book there this early april, only charge us less than us$140 inclusive of taxes. great location with 5 star accomodation
