San Francisco - Hotel Whitcomb - comments on the area it's located in

My wife and I and another couple are spending two nights in SFO in August. The Hotel Whitcomb has been suggested. TripAdvisor.com has a significant amount of bad reviews, with many comments made about it's location at 1231 Market Street as being in a pretty bad/unsafe area. I am looking for comments from those familiar with this area. Thanks very much.

It's not the best area. Why there?

Not sure why the Hotel Whitcomb was recommended. I personally like what I read about the Cornell Hotel de France located only about six blocks north from the Whitcomb.

The Whitcomb was $254 without taxes, which was a fine price range for us.

Try The Mosser, great location. Some rooms have shared hall bath that are very clean and well kept. Other rooms have private baths.

Not a very good location. Lots of vagrants & homeless people hanging out. It will feel quite threatening in the evenings. There's also LOTS of construction going on in the Mid-Market area both east & west of 1231 Market.

I was near there on Wednesday while my wife had a City Guides meeting at the Public Library close by.

Try someplace else.

Thanks to all, done deal, no Hotel Whitcomb in our future!

@StuDudley: Any thoughts on the Cornell Hotel de France?
