Hello,
For those who know about the SF
area in detail, are there any hotels
in San Francisco that are safe
and are family suites with 2 rooms?
Also, are there any grocery stores
within walking distance.
I'm looking to spend $110 or less per
night.

I'd prefer knowing about any hotels
that are close by the trolleys and
easy to take the bay cruises from...

Also, are rolling blackouts a concern?

Please let me know about good suites
that offer good deals. thank you

Hasn't been a rolling blackout in a few months, not a problem. SF is just as safe as any other place either stay in Union Square of by the wharf. It always amazes me when people think large metro areas are worse than smaller towns. Actually you have more of a chance being a victim in smaller cities. Do a search on sf hotels. As for spending less than $110 a day, if you're including food and activities won't be able to do it. YES we have grocery stores, but it's cheaper to eat out here than buy food. A box of ceral will run you $5. I suggest you do some research, its an expensive place to live and visit. That way you can ask more specific questions. It shouldn't take you more than an hour or so to do some web searches. Stop being so lazy and do some leg work.

Sine livehere did not read your post very carefully (anne marie said $110/night right after asking about hotels, duh), I'll give you the short answer: there's no such thing as a suite in SF for $110/night, period. Be prepared for the fact that SF has a very high cost of living, which is reflected in lodging prices. For affordable rooms or for suites for somewhat more, look into the Andrews and the San Remo (SR has shared baths), and into the Columbus Motor Inn and other motels on Lombard St.

Don't worry about getting around via public transit (e.g., to the ferry docks), it will be pretty simple wherever you are.

Best way to know for sure about groceries is to ask the hotel when you call, but there should at least be small shops available wherever. And of corse it doesn't cost less to eat out than to buy groceries for some meals if you're a family. Cereal is ridiculously expensive everywhere, BTW, not just SF.

Yes I read the question, but because of the extreme naivete about whether SF would have safe hotels or grocery stores. I didn't want to assume she meant $110 just for hotel, I thought it because she did say per night, but as I was LOL I thought just maybe she didn't. Yes you are right that she will not be able to find a suite for that price. A hotel room, Yes. Public Transportation can get you everywhere, but can be time consuming. I know because I take it every day. As for not being able to eat out for less, I sooo beg to differ even for a family. First off, she will not have excess to a kitchen, besides if all you want is something like hamburger helper than maybe. There are so many different ethnic foods here. You just have to know where to go. I could have her family eating wonderful food each night for $8 per person or less...Actually for breakfest it might be cheaper to get some stuff at the store, but lunch and dinner, no...Safeway is the big grocery store here and there is one down by the wharf and also one on church street and I believe one on California if you happen to be in union square, both easy to get to by muni(out public trans). You can buy a pass for 1,3,5,7 days I believe and it is good for unlimited rides on all muni, including cable cars. i wouldn't underestimate the power of priceline. while a suite might hard, i can't believe i just scored a night at the holiday inn golden gateway for $50 a night (taxes, etc., bring it up to about $65). while i'm glad we're not staying there the whole time, it brings down the cost of hotels for an expensive town big-time...

I can recommend the Pacific Heights Inn on Union Street (not Union Square) and I believe that other posters have stayed here in a little family suite with kitchenette. I doubt you'll do it for less than $110 though. In this area also are some small restaurants and there are inexpensive places in Chinatown, North Beach and Inner Richmond as well as down in the Mission District. I think you might actually do better buying bakery and fruit for breakfast than cereal. Of course, we have grocery stores! No rolling blackouts for several months now--it seems they have it under control. Suggest you check out www.sfgate.com and click on visitors guide or sf-visitor.
