Try FOG CITY DINER. It's not diner food at all (more eclectic cooking and combinations) but it's in an old diner type building that's been modernized. The restaurant is not far from the Embarcadero, on Front Streeet I think. Enjoy.

Did somebody say.....restaurants??

There are tons of good ones in S.F. There's The Waterfront on Fisherman's Wharf, Scotts' Seafood Bar and Grill, The Carnelian Room (atop the Bank of America building in the financial district), the Four Seasons, Washington Street Bar and Grill, Gaylords in Ghirardelli Square, Perry's (if you're a yuppie) and for great desserts, you must stop at Max's Opera House Cafe. These are just a few of the good ones. It is said that if you had dinner in a restaurant in S.F. every night, it would take almost a full year to hit every one. Happy eating!

Lulu's for delicious wood-oven cuisine and bustling city atmosphere. Flying Saucer for original ideas and flamboyant presentation (very San Francisco). Yank Sing for an exciting dim sum brunch (many mini-meals on wheels). The House for Asian/California hybrid -- ordinary looking, extraordinary cooking, in picturesque North Beach.

Two very upscale French restaurants (according to the Wine Spectator, Oct. 96) are Fluer de lys on Sutter and Masa's on Bush. Both are in the Union Square area. These are VERY expensive, but world-class establishments.

My goodness, you get around! I just left you a message on Lake Louise! Try the Garden Court at the Sheraton Palace Hotel for dinner, drinks at the Top of the Mark, or a cabaret show in the Plush Room at the York Hotel on Sutter Street. We did that last May. What a night on the town!

Oh my gosh -- there are so many!!! Try Scala's in the Sir Francis Drake hotel -- a small upscale bistro w/great pasta, great wine and fabulous desserts. If you like Italian -- you must go to North Beach. I hear that Rose Pistola is great there. If you want someplace fun, there is Cha Cha Cha's in Haight-Ashbury -- wonderful Carribean food. One of my favorite restaurants is actually outside of Berkely. It is called Skates on the Bay -- amazing seafood and wonderful views. It is definitely worth the short trip is you have a car.

I second Hamlet's suggestion on the Fog Street Diner. It is very unique and "just fun" kind of place. It has appeared on national television. However, it looks like Simrin is the real expert here - wish I had seen his list before we went.
