San Francisco Dining- Financial/North Beach/Wharf area
We will be in San Francisco for 3 days in October with our 7 year old daughter. Staying at the Hyatt Embarcadero and looking for dining suggestions (we will have a cable car/bus pass and don't mind walking in safe areas!) We are definitely going to the Tonga Room - even if the food isn't that great- just because we Love anything Hawaiian! We need help with lunch and dinner the other nights - we love unique, fun, lively, no chains, great atmosphere. We don't need Kid friendly- she's been all over! Any type of food but Mexican. Also, Looking for good Italian in North Beach.
Thanks!!!
Thanks!!!

Note that Delfina has a full-service restaurant, and next door (but completely separate), a wait-in-line pizza place, which is my favorite in the city (I could easily subsist on a Delfina margherita pizza, tricolore salad and one of several appetizers -- either roasted cauliflower, short ribs arancini, or meatballs ---- all shared). Likewise, Perbacco has an adjacent more casual restaurant, also very good, called Barbacco. They take reservations and walk-ins. Lastly, Slanted Door has a take-out version called "Out the Door" in several locations in the city, including the Ferry Building and the food court at the Westfield Mall (San Francisco Centre).
Craig Stoll, the chef and owner of Delfina, also just opened a new restaurant:
This is a very popular restaurant. Perbacco, Incanto, & Delfina are my three favorite Italian restaurants.

Wife and I come to SF every two summers - me for a Trade show at Moscone center. After years of Union Square hotels we stayed at Hyatt Embarcadero this time - will be our new place. Agree with Perbacco, excellent food and atmosphere - can't beat the location with regards to the Hyatt. Slanted Door is right across the street from Hyatt with good food and fun albeit noisy atmosphere.
In North beach we love E’ Tutto Qua. Good food, reasonable, high energy, and fun Italian waiters.

1) The Out The Door (Slanted Door) in Westfieldd Center has been closed for almost a year and not expected to reopen. However for casual food court food, other options in the Westfield Center would be fine w/ a 7 year old.
Up the hill on Bush and Powell is Uncle Vitos PizzaDeli - not really a deli, but good pizza, good Italian entrees and reasonable prices. Also casual.

Next door to Perbacco is Tadich Grill, established in 1849, a classic SF seafood restaurant. Alfred's Steakhouse just off Kearny is another old school place. Yank Sing at the Rincon Center for a dim sum lunch. Haven't been to the North Beach Restaurant in years, but my wife and I both enjoyed eating there in the past (is it still good Stu?).

The Asian place opening on Primrose is by a former chef at Slanted Door called The Asian Box (now open in Palo Alto).

LOL, sf.
We are big fans or "The 'baccos".
We were hanging out at The No Beach Resto a few mos ago for a "final final" and it smelled awesome as usual and very Old School SF.
Some newbies we've tried the past year are Skool, 1300 Fillmore, Dosa <on Fillmore>, The Boxing Room, Bottle Cap (good pierogies-who knew?)

>> It must be the Hola space.<
Or the huge corner place next to Books Inc in Crosby Commons - including the candy spot which was asked to move. Also, the same rumor source said that Perry's is opening up a spot on Burlingame Ave.
Skool is one of our "go to" places Kal!!!

We also really enjoyed Perbacco...it was probably the best meal we had in SF. Taddich Grill is an institution and certainly worth trying maybe for lunch.
Out the Door in the Ferry building was very good and allowed us to sample some Slanted Door favorites without paying the big bucks. If you are in town on a Saturday I recommend going to the Ferry building for the farmers market. There is also a very good free tour of the building done by City Guides.
Belden Place is an interesting alley with multiple restaurants set up with outside tables as well as having inside dining too.

I would highly recommend "Ideale's " on Grant Ave in North Beach. I live in the neighborhood, being a native San Franciscan, and Italian- this is my favorite Italian restaurant. Authentic Roman style trattoria and excellent cuisine and very casual. Do try it out when you are in North beach for dinner.

Although they're both very good, we prefer Barbacco to Perbacco and usually go for an early dinner on our first night in town. It's very casual with a great buzz and delicious food. We've never been disappointed. We also like Tadich, A16, Skool, and Waterbar for lunch; Flour and Water, Cotogna, Frances and Park Tavern for dinner. There are so many great choices. We'll be there in a few weeks and plan to try Delfina, SPQR and Claudine. Enjoy your trip!
