San Francisco at the end of Aug
We are coming to SF the 3rd week in August for 5 days, we have been once before in October 5 years ago ( just after 9/11) and it was very quiet. What can we expect in the way crowds etc and weather this time? Thanks

Weather should be beautiful. There no doubt will still be a lot of visitors plus the residents of course but if you walk away from the well known tourist spots you should be able to get off on your own a bit.
It won't be like October after 911 of course. But part of the fun of SF is the people..well most of them.
I wouldn't wait until the last minute to reserve your hotel etc.

We vacationed in SF on year at the end of August and we were unprepared for the fluctuation in weather. Be sure you pack light pants and a light jacket or sweater -- it is entirely possible to need them in August. We did!

the weather will be beautiful, no rain, but be forewarned, when the fog comes in in the afternoon it can be very cold and windy. Keep a jacket handy, or you'll be just another tourist with a brand new "San Francisco" jacket or sweater sold in every store in the afternoon like umbrellas appear on every street corner in NYC when it rains.

It's true that rain is extremely unlikely in S.F. during the month of August. If you are lucky, the very tail end of August might be the beginning of our much welcomed "indian summer" in San Francisco. Then again, the last week of August could also be the tail end of fog season here. At any rate, do bring a sweater and light jacket and DO NOT plan on wearing shorts every day!
A lot of students are back in school by late August. It's not like mid-July when it's the peak of tourist season. Even so, it is good to know some tips for avoiding crowds. For instance, save your cable car ride for after dinner, not midday. You'd be amazed how uncrowded the tourist sites can be if you just pick your time right.
