San Francisco area weather

Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect weather-wise for our trip to San Fran/Carmel/Sonoma over Labor Day week?

I've never been to the area but am told the temp can vary widely.

Any locals with tips?

Thanks! (I feel like I'm posting constantly for advice! - hopefully I can return the favor for those visiting NYC)

SF will likely be cool, Carmel warmer but still cool and Sonoma could be hot. Your best bet is to check the online weather right before you leave and dress for their forecast. Yahoo's weather is usually right.

Long pants and a windbreaker (at least) for SF. Carmel has the Ocean fog too but it usually burns off by the afternoon. Plan on high 70s and damp fog. Sonoma will be high 80s.

Bring layered clothing - a T-shirt, turtleneck/sweatshirt/sweater and a windbreaker - the last especially if you are planning on hiking across the Golden Gate Bridge.

It oculd be foggy and cold in the morning and warm to shirtsleeves weather by noon, then back again to foggy weather by nightfall, so bring enough to cover all variations in the weather.

Sonoma could easily be over 100. You just never know. Watch the forecasts. We always have a light jacket in the car for SF and the coast and any evenings.

And a t-shirt will do for the extreme heat. Otherwise, it is usually most pleasant and comfortable.

Definitely lots of layers. Count on hot weather in Sonoma, and various layers needed for SF. It usually cools off in the evenings, and if a wind picks up it will be chilly.
