I see that on expedia.com for the Labor Day weekend that our favorite, Westin St. Francis is $129..sign up for the rewards club and possibly get an upgrade..we always do to the new tower..some like the older section..
Also check last minute deals.
We love the hotel and the location to everything.

I think you would enjoy "Beach Blanket Babylon." See what you think: www.BeachBlanketBabylon.com

Also here are some free things to do in SF:

clifbob, you might try Columbus Motor Inn, though I've noticed that it tends to book up on weekends well in advance. I'd call it nice, but maybe it's not your kind of NICE! But it has a very nice location close to downtown San Francisco, walking distance to everything, and if you're driving, the parking is free. It's nothing fancy, but the rooms have been redecorated and are very comfortable.

I find the Columbus Motor Inn is not my kind of NICE.... it is functional and spacious, but dated.

The Westin St. Francis is very nice and a fabulous deal at 129/night. I also stay at the Sir Francis Drake in the same Union Square block for as low as 109/night. rooms are small in this historic building but well decorated and "nice". Rooms at Columbus Motor inn are much more spacious but I prefer style to space.

The Mosser is nice, great location and may have the kind of prices you are looking for. TheMosser.com

If you have not seen it, Wicked is great. It is at the Orpheum.

King Tut exhibit is at the DeYoung in Golden Gate Park. Some hotels have packages for stays & the Tut exhibit.
