I agree with Stu on the "funk-o-meter". Clement St. is "varied" but not funky. Haight St. is still "funky" in the sense that it has stores that aren't chain stores (see Stu's reference to Amoeba Records), still has stores selling used clothes and the like, and has a more interesting "mix" of people. The end of Haight Street is also the beginning of Golden Gate Park.

And Hayes Valley is also a great "walk-eat-window shop" kind of neighborhood.

Oh, and the Haight also has some really nice residential buildings if you get off of Haight Street itself.

Thanks all for the Haight tips. Since my kids almost grew up in Manhattan and I lived in the Village for 10 years that word picture of Haight is about what I had seen, when I was there a number of months ago. Yes, I would like them to see the Bohemians and also take the suggestion of shops and walking around, off the beaten path, as well. Definitely go to some of the shops and the album store which my son collects (vinyl). Great Album covers and album notes as well. Thanks again.
