I haven't been to the "safari"(are you talking about the wildlike park, maybe?), but the San Diego Zoo is AWESOME!!! I was there in January with my fiance' and his mother, and we all had a great time. The zoo is also considered a botanical garden because if the many species of plants and flowers all through the grounds. Haven't seen a better zoo yet. Have fun!

The San Diego Zoo and the Wild animal Park are quite different. The only common things they have are the animals. At the zoo, you can take a bus tour, then wander round the whole place all day. At the Wild Animal Park (which is about twenty-five miles north of San Diego and owned and operated by the San Diego Zoological Society, as is the zoo) you would take a monorail tour of the entire park. Then you can wander round some animal enclosures and "Nairobi Village" where there are gift shops, the petting kraal and eating places. The scenery around the park is beautiful. The giant pandas are at the zoo. The butterflies are at the Park. You could check out the zoo's web site where you can compare both of them-www.sdzoo.com.

Have done both, recommend doing both.
As noted, both are operated by the same organization, SOOO, you can buy a double ticket when you go the first and save a few bucks.
The Wild Animal Park has its animals more spread out in life-like setting, and you thus feel less intimate with the animals. However, you get a better sense of what their real existence is like when they're not behind bars.
Since you like seeing animals and have ten days with no plans; seeing both places is probably the best way to spend your time.

Having also done both, I must say I prefer the Wild Animal park, which is very eco friendly and educational, fun and a real chance to see animals as the should be seen, roaming in relative freedom and interacting with other species. The San Diego zoo is a zoo, smallish enclosures, (though not as small as some I've seen) and bars as a previous poster mentioned.
Last time I went to the Wild Animal Park they had a program where you could spend the night there in tents, and really get to see and hear the animals, it was wonderful, that happened to coincide with "founders day" at the zoo, so the Wild Animal park was nearly empty, our tram got to spend 20 minutes watching an endangered animal giving birth.. we had to all be quiet....by the time the baby antelope was born everyone on the tram, adults, kids, were totally bonded, (some crying) and we'd all felt like we'd been through a real miracle... couldn't have seen that at a zoo!
