San Diego Apartment?
I would love some advice! I'm 30, married but no kids and would like to live in an area that is not ultra-boring or too quiet. I'm looking for an apartment, not a house. What parts of town are hip and nice? Is La Jolla a good place to find an apartment? Thanks! -Leslie

La Jolla is a very nice area, but pricey. I live in the La Jolla/UTC area, which is also nice but not as upscale. I don't know how "hip" it is, but this area is adjacent to La Jolla and is primarily condos and apartments. It is close to UCSD (which is in La Jolla) and is a 10-minute drive to the beach.
Another area you may want to consider is Pacific Beach, which is also adjacent to La Jolla and is particularly popular with the twenty-something crowd.

One caveat--rental prices have risen sharply in San Diego in the last few years, so depending on where you are coming from, you may be in for a bit of sticker shock. Good luck on your search!

try Hillcrest, North Park or even Normal Heights for hipness and more urban feel. LJ is too pricey. UTC is where a lot of young professionals live (too many college students also) but there is no place to walk around and enjoy the eclectic shops,neighborhood type restaurants, bookstores and coffeeshops that hillcrest and north park have. it's the big gay area though, so if you're open minded and don't care then you'll love the area.

Hi again, thanks to all, for answering. Yes, a pool is important. I am moving from New York city where we have a 1 bedroom (500 sq ft) for $2000 a month. That is actually a pretty good deal here. Obviously it is very different in San Diego where the apartments seem more like gorgeous resorts! Also what is the job market like in the advertising /creative market these days? Thanks!

Being from NYC, you might consider Little Italy and the Marina District, both of which are within downtown San Diego. If you are looking for a resort atmosphere, check out La Mirage in Mission Valley, it's like living at a Club Med resort.
