San diego + ?

Hi my husband and I are visiting san diego in mid nov for a conf. We will be there 3-4 days. We'd like to visit/ see somewhere else for 2-3 days. This will be our first time to southern california. We will be flying in/out LA (from nyc). We will spend 1 night in LA ( with family) but not interested in seeing it.
Want to see/experience a unique S californian landscape/setting.
We could append to the beginning of our trip.
Thanks,S

ARe you more interested in a unique S. Californian beach setting, or a unique S. Californian mountain setting or a unique S. Californian desert setting? There isn't one, convenient, "unique S. Californian landscape/setting" which is what makes the area so great.

Maybe Santa Barbara?

ah! did'nt think of that.. Am looking into santa barbara and capistrano mission..

I have a crazy idea of flying into las vegas and out of LA just to see the grand canyon. But I might be too crazy here!

"or maybe death valley?"

Maybe. It's a longish drive from San Diego, but November would be a good time of year to visit.
