One of my all time favorite Mexican (Mexican NOT Tex-Mex) is in San Antonio....La Fogata on Vance Jackson Get the grilled poblano stuffed with grilled chicken and cheese.......WOW! And their salsa is fantastic! Go on a sunny day because they have GORGEOUS patios. I also like L'Etoile in Alamo Heights. As for fun on the river...I've had some pretty good food and fun at Rio Rio.

If you are in the market area downtown, I recommend Mi Tierra (SA institution) for good Tex-Mex. La Margarita is more touristy in same area but good for price. Karam's on Zarzamora is one of my favorites & not that far from downtown. For Italian, I like Pisiano's (spelling?) near Alamo Heights. For good jazz try The Landing on the Riverwalk. SA is a really fun city; take the river boat &, if you are there on Sunday, the noon Mariachi mass at Mission San Jose is worth the trek. If you are there the week of April 21, you have Fiesta--with parades, Night in Old San Antonio & lots of fun. Try traveltex.com for more info.

You must have a car, but the Grey Moss Inn is great. It has a spectacular wine list.

I have to agree with the Mi Tierra suggestion, it's great Mexican and very reasonably priced.

Try Boudro's on the Riverwalk. It's fantastic -- be sure to make reservations well in advance. I agree with Mi Tierra and Las Margaritas. Either is a must for great Mexican atmosphere -- the mariachis at Las Margaritas are better. Ask them to play "El Nino Perdido" and the all-time favorite "Rancho Grande" and, of course, "Guadalajara".
