Looking for a weeks vacation during February 2008, and thought about San Antonio would 7 days be to long?

A week just in SA is too long. When in Feb? Early Feb is still winter, and the weather can be cold and rainy, or even occasional freeze. By late Feb you're more likely to see spring like weather conditions.

I agree. A week in February is just too long. You likely won't be able to do much outdoors, such as the Riverwalk and the missions, due to likely cold, rainy weather. You might consider doing a couple days in Austin or Fort Worth instead of jus San Antonio.

You could combine with Austin and Hill Country with SA although your weather could be iffy.

End of January beginning February we are thinking of, however, following your comments I think we will have to look at another destination

You may have already moved on to other plans, but while a week in SA is too much, a trip through hill country and SA might be right. That's if you are mobile, of course. If you fly and rent a car, that might not be cost effective for you. If you want nice weather and plain old relaxing, perhaps Florida in Feb.

As yet, we have not decided on another location, I was thinking of staying at a hotel on the River walk, and as I will be hiring a car, thought we could tour round.

While I agree that a week in SA may be too long I can say that we've been to SA in January twice and both times enjoyed the Riverwalk, even eating outside on some days. A light jacket for evening was fine, I know the weather can be iffy but both times we've had good luck.

I know Texas is a big state, we thought that SA would be the place to visit, however, how about Dallas, Houston, Austin?

Hope this is not a stupid question, how far is either Dallas, Houston, Austin be from SA?

Not a stupid question at all. Austin is about 75 miles from SA. I think a combination of Austin and SA would be great. Please see this thread with advice about Austin.

Well that’s makes SA more desirable now, within our week’s vacation I am thinking of doing day trips to either Austin, Dallas, Houston.

I know this may involve a lot of driving; fortunately, driving is not a problem whilst on vacation.

I think Dallas would be rough for a day trip from SA. 4 1/2 hours each way approximaely, not during rush hour.

I agree w/trippinkpj, either Dallas or Houston will be too far for a day trip. There are plenty of things to keep you busy in the Austin/SA area.

There are a few places of interest between these cities. There's a quaint little town called Gruene (pronounced Green) and I recommend lunch or dinner at the Grist Mill. Also there's Natural Bridge Caverns with a drive-thru zoo next door. I'm not sure if the zoo is open year round or not.

I did more searching and the zoo is open year round. It's pretty cool because you can feed the animals as you drive past them.

OK,thanks for all the links and information.

Initially we decided on SA, and then against it, however, with all the positive feedback on here, we have more or less decided we will visit SA.

My partner and I are in our mid 40’s; we prefer to be in and around “The Action” so I think the River Walk will be the best place, what would the weather be like during January / early February, would it be like the East Coast?

The weather could be in the 70's in Feb or freezing....it's Texas and the weather varies at time of the year. My son's birthday 2/27 and it's been 78 one year and the next we had snow (just a few snowflakes).

Downtown and the Riverwalk are beautiful, it's where I would stay.

Re: packing, check the weather shortly before you leave and think layers. Layers work well here.

Friends of ours who live in Baltimore were here over the Easter weekend and found themselves shopping for jackets. It was unseasonably cold to say the least. The weather in winter is definitely unpredictable, unlike summer when the thermo gets stuck on hot. ;-)

Definitely check the weather before deciding what to pack for your trip. As others have said, Feb weather is very unpredictable!

Good day trips: Austin, Luckenbach/Hill Country, Bandera (cowboy capital of Texas). Do the "Mission Trail" and see at least a couple of the historic missions. San Jose has the visitor's center for the group.

Definitely stay downtown on or near the Riverwalk!

If you are going to visit Austin don't do a day trip. Austin is a much better stay a few nights city, and less of a see in one day place.

Yes, there are some sights, but the beauty of Austin is enjoying the atmosphere. Great dinners, a night out on 6th St partying, finding a club with live country music.
