I stayed at the Crockett (across the street from the Menger) a few weeks ago. The Menger is a stately old almost New Orleans style hotel, proximal to the Alamo and the Shopping Center (RiverPark). There is an ice cream parlor and a few nice shops including one on toy soldiers that is worthy of a visit right next door to the lovely old Victorian gem. The one called La Mansion has merit in that it is directly on the RiverWalk. Near this establishment is Planet Hollywood, and all the restaurants that line RiverWalk, which is the lively activity for all your evenings...safe, and a pleasure to stroll. I'd go the Menger because I liked its lobby and the Alamo is lovely to wake up to each morning.

I stayed at La Mansion earlier this year on a business trip and it was very nice. My room looked directly onto the River Walk but I couldn't open the door out to it (probably a security measure as I was on ground level). The room was not huge and probably would have seemed small to me if my husband had been with me and we were there for several days. It does open directly onto the River Walk which is nice.

We stayed at La Mansion in April. Was very happy with the hotel especially the location. We enjoy being in an area were we do not have to go far for restaurants and entertainment. This is a perfect location on the Riverwalk. At night it is very pretty. Ask for a room overlooking the Riverwalk. Enjoy your trip. We loved it.

Have stayed at both. The Menger is an old, elaborate hotel, with a big lobby for lounging around and listening to piano music, etc. It is only about a block from the Riverwalk, by way of the Alamo. Pretty lighted shopping area between the hotel and the Riverwalk. Where you enter is right in the middle of hotels, restaurants, etc. and about a block or 2 from where you would enter the Riverwalk from LaMansion. La Mansion is adobe, southwestern atmosphere, but very classy. I believe it was an old convent or girls' school in a former life. LaMansion gives you the southwestern influence of San Antonio, and the Menger has the rich old cattle barons atmosphere. Take your pick.

Just got the statement for stay in San Antonio. The bill for our wonderful dinner at La Mansion was 143.00! It was worth every cent, though. It was a wonderful tasting menu complete with different wine, champagne, etc for each course. We dined out on the lovely Riverwalk terrace and the waiter was so attentive that it was truely our "send-off" evening in San Antonio. Hope you enjoy the Mansion, too. -Cher
