Roy's in Hawaii

My wife and I ate a Roy's at Pebble Beach a couple years ago and it was great.

We understand that he has a couple on Maui and Oahu, and are looking for a recomendation on which one is best....

Thanks to all...

we ate at the one in maui....the view is nonexistent, its in a strip mall with a mcdonalds, halfway between lahaina and kapalua..., but the food is great and the chocolate souffle is a religious experience....if you are a non-fish eater in hawaii, you will be happy to be at roys....I was!

We ate at the one in Hawaii Kai on Oahu. Not worth the hype, also no view, food/service so-so, kinda noisy. Very over rated.

Haven't tried the Roy's in Oahu.We have eaten at the one in Maui, also Nicolinas, next door. It is named for Roy's daughter. It is a little more casual and at one point had southwestern/asian food choices. I actually liked that one better due to the serious list of appetizers that made for great 'grazing'. The chocolate souffle was definitely awesome, but be careful, it's hot. My 6 yr old son burned his finger pretty badly on it. I have also tried the Kauai and Big Island Roys. We had an exploding glass episode at the Big Island Roy's. I thought they should have comped us some drinks for that one. It seemed like a common event given that they had the clean up down to a science (countless slivers of glass everywhere), luckily this was just over drinks - they told us they have had to re-do entire dinners over this problem in the past. You would think they would change glass vendors or let those glasses cool down before they fill them with ice water. Oh well, it was quite exciting and not too much blood was spilled. All of the Roy's are in little shopping malls with no views of spectacular scenery. Still, great seafood and that chocolate souffle ...I'd rather have great food then great views for dinner.

Roys Kohala Grill in the Kohala Gateway Mall on Maui is my favorite Roys location. Although there is no "view" and its location is 100% strip mall, the food and accomodating service are really special. Even dining at its bar can be a treat, as the bartenders coddle you with attention, suggestions and sometimes, freebies. I prefer this restaurant to its "sister" location right next door, Roys Nicolina and also find Roys Waikoloa Grill on the Big Island to be a step below its Maui sibling. I consider myself something of a "foodie", and share your enthusiasm for Roys!

We ate at the Roy's in Poipu on Kauai twice and once at the one in the Kahana Mall on Maui. The meals at both were great and the chocolate souffle is out of this world. The service at both was good, but a little fast at the one on Kauai.

We were just at Roy's in Maui last month. The food and service were both excellent. The chocolate souffle was a real treat. It is very expensive but it was worth it. A fun place that we found in Maui was Bubba Gump's in Lahaina. The service and food was very good. If you go during lunch, it is not as crowded. Also, the Pacific Cafe in Kihei had excellent food.

We have eaten at the Roy's on Kauai for the last 3 years, usually several times per trip. While the service has always been very good, in our opinion the food quality has declined greatly and in fact since our last trip (Nov 99) we decided not to eat at Roy's the next trip, but go to A Pacific Cafe in Kapaa (the original of the chain, still great since 1991) and Beach House (although the ownership had just changed late last year). We also tried Tidepools at the Hyatt, which we both loved. As stated, the restaurant is in a shopping center. We have also eaten at the Roy's Maui but not recently enough to comment on it.

Steven,
I ate at the one in Hawaii Kai and wish I had worn my snowsuit. It was so cold that enjoying your meal was impossible. Also, the setting, if you could call it that, was dull; it's in a corporate park. Roy's used to be the only or one of the few innovative restaurants in Oahu but now there are far better restaurants in Oahu than Roy's. I recently posted a few that I have enjoyed. If you can't find them on the forum, email me at home.

I too agree that there are far better restaurants in Hawaii than Roy's. The food is good, but other's would be better to spend your time & $$

ROys is great food -with an out of this world dessert-the souffle-we were also pleased when we went to roys waikoloa grill on the big island this year-they had anexvceptional childrens menu-it was $11 pricey for kids but came in like 6 courses-appetizers, veggies with dip, meal ,desert etc. they really catered to our 2 yr ols dtr which made our dinig experience more pleasurable-we went back the night before we left-the food as good as ever-now we have tried 3 -Kauaii, maui and The big island-in september pebble beach-cant wait! By the way, mortons steakhouse in vegas and LA also has a very similar dessert-Godiva souffle they call it-just a notch below roys- we also bought the souffle kit and recipe for home -turns out good but not quite the same.

We have a Mortons here in town, and have gotten the soufflé each visit. We are very excited to try Roy's... And will post our opinion on who's is better.

Six days and counting until the flight leaves.

Thanks to all for your postings.

We have always liked Roy's, and celebrated our son's birthday at Roy's Hawaii Kai last weekend. The chocolate souffle is still fabulous, and there are always new things on the menu.

I agree that by comparison, Roy's may not be what it was ten years ago, when on the cutting edge of Hawaiian Regional cuisine. Now, ten years later, Hawaii is a foodie's heaven, with lots of great choices. I am attaching a link to yesterday's Star Bulletin, with the latest Zagat ratings, which are helpful. Roy's always fares well.

When you get to the feature page, click on "Stuffs" on the left-hand frame, and scroll down to the article on the new page.
Aloha!

Kalena -- Thanks for posting the address for the Zagat's list -- I printed it out and will take it with me when I go to Maui & Kauai later this year. Some of the restaurants were already on our list of those to try, but there were a few on there I didn't know about, so I appreciate it.

Our favorite Roy's is Roy's Waikoloa Grill. We've also enjoyed the one on Kauai. BUT our favorite restaurant in the Islands is A Pacific Cafe (Kihei, Maui and Kapaa, Kauai!)
