royal lahaina question

hi all - returning to maui for the second time, booked 4 nights @ the royal lahaina... any impressions/feedback out there as to room quality, hotel cleanliness, their luau, etc.? its my understanding that the beach is quite nice for sunning & snorkeling, and luckily got an ocean view room - i just want to make sure where i sleep is as pleasurable! thanks in advance! -geoffrey

I'm considering going to their luau, although I bought the book "Maui Revealed" and they rate it a "distant third". Everyone loves the Old Lahaina luau...For 2 adults and 1 child, I'm not sure I want to drop $180 for a buffet, ethentic or not! I save that cash for Swans Court or something similar.

I always stay on the Wailea side, but this trip we're staying 4 nights over there and 5 nights at the Hyatt. I've heard from too many sources that if you don't stay in the main area of Kaanapali beach, "it's too far from the action". (Meaning up by Embassy Suites) Good luck.

I am not sure when you are planning to go, but right now there are labor problems at the hotel. Last week, workers were striking and picketing out front.

The beach at the Royal Lahaina is probably one of the best in the area, wide, sandy, and lovely. Don't know much about the hotel except I have walked past it (on the beach) many times, it looks OK from the beach side. Actually we ate breakfast there about 10 yrs ago and it was very good (too far back to base a decision on tho!) It's fairly close to Lahaina tho which is a plus if you like to get into town. I believe Pleasant Hawaiian Tours owns (or at least manages it) and some of their employees have been striking lately.

Geoffrey,
Have you done a search of the forum for the Royal Lahaina? I know I've seen questions about it before.
