Route to Banff from Minnesota

What would be the best way to Banff from Minnesota? Also, looking for a nice halfway point to stop overnight or for a day. Thanks!

It would help if we knew where in Minnesota you are leaving from.

Shortest will be going NW from ND to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and then the Trans-Canada. However, part of this route will be two-lane (one-lane each way), and mostly non-freeway.

An alternate will be I-94 to Glendive, MT, and then MT200/US87,or I-94 to Forsyth, then US12/87; and then pick up I-15 at Great Falls north towards Calgary. Higher speed on the interstate portions, but add about 130 miles.
