You can drive straight from Albuquerque to Carlsbad; it's only about four hours. Is there a reason you want to stay in Roswell?

If you really feel a need to spend the night in Roswell, there is a Best Western, a Comfort and/or Quality Inn, stuff like that.

Personally, since you're coming out here to see Carlsbad Caverns, I would just drive straight to Carlsbad and stay there.

Since we're getting to Albuquerque airport around 2:30 p.m., by the time we get our car/luggage, we thought maybe we'd just go part way after a long day of travel--we'll be up at 5 a.m. to go to the airport! So we'll probably be ready to just relax a bit, and start fresh the next day. On the way down, we may meander if something strikes our fancy. Mostly we just want a really slow paced, relaxing trip this time around. But thanks for the hotel names--I'll check them out.

OK, that makes sense.

If the weather is good, you can still drive from Albuquerque to Carlsbad in four hours. You could get in around 7:00, have a nice dinner somewhere, and relax. Roswell is only about an hour from Carlsbad, so you're not breaking up your trip much by stopping there.

If you'd rather meander on the way down, go ahead and stay in Albuquerque, then stop in Capitan (Smokey Bear State Park right on the main street) and Lincoln (Billy the Kid sites) on the way.

There's supposed to be a great place to stay there called Hanger 51. It's quite secluded and they offer full privacy.
