We are So Cal residents and our daugher lives in SF so we love to visit on great deals! Had good luck with Luxurylink.com, expedia and orbitz. Love the PACKAGES on ll.com, but if included meals, etc. aren't a requirement, check out the other web sites. In SF you won't go hungry!!

The Sherman House was romantic and unforgettable. It is an old victorian in the Pacific Heights neighborhood.

There is much here for a couple to like, including private gardens, antique furniture, in-room fireplaces. It is the perfect place for a couple that wants to spend some intimate time in the hotel. It was told to us that Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger used to stay here when they were in town. The only down side is that San Fran is such a vibrant interesting city that you may end up spending a lot of time outside the hotel.

The other down side is that the bill may stay on your credit card statement for almost as long as the memories. Lower fares than the outrageous list fares can be found through some of the on-line booking agencies.

Price aside, this place definitely fits your description.

Well my friends are back and they had a wonderful time. They stayed at the Mandarin Oriental and had a fantastic stay. They told me that the staff went out of their way to make reservations, fix picnic baskets and get them to the theater on time the first night they arrived. Their room was beautifully appointed and the view was beautiful. Will visit with them further tomorrow and post a more detailed report about restaurants etc. Thanks to everyone that helped out with recommendations. I would have never known about the Mandarin if it had not been for the Fodors.com Boards.

I've heard the same about Gary Danko. Also my SF favorite restaurant is Farallon for seafood. Great food-cool setting. The entire restaurant is like you are under an art deco sea--very cool.
