Ali,
Our favorite Chicago hotels for old-style charm are the Drake and the Palmer House, both right downtown...do not be fooled by guidebooks that say the Blackstone is "historic" or romantic...it is just old and run-down and grubby!!! Our new, hip favorite is the Allegro Hotel that is loads of fun with a funky interior, great decor, wine tasting, high energy staff, etc...
Good Luck@!!! Maria

I couldn'g agree more with Maria. The Palmer House is wonderful!! We have stayed there on two occasions. In my opinion it is wonderful!! Have the Griddle Cake for breakfast. It's our favorite! Even if we don't stay at the Palmer House, we always go their for breakfast one morning. You can't get the griddle cake in the coffee shop, you must have it in the main dining room. Have a great time. I just love, love, love Chicago....

Speaking of history, I just read an interesting tidbit about the Palmer house Hotel. After the Battle of Wounded Knee (somebody please correct me if I have my battles wrong!), there was a court martial/inquiry to determine what had actually taken place, and it was held at the Palmer House!
