390 to 17, then over the Tappan Zee Bridge, but check first on possible road construction delays.

Look at a map to see details on getting from 17 to the bridge.

Added bonus: parts of 17 along the Southern Tier are beautifully scenic as are sections of 390.

I like the Thruway all the way to the Tappan Zee. It is a little longer milewise but it will not take you any longer timewise and it is a very easy drive (although a little boring). I also like the fact that there are periodic service areas that don't require an exit.

Another option is the Thruway to Rte. 81 S. (you'll be on the Thruway for about an hour b/f you get to 81). Then 81S to 17 to the Tappan Zee.

I've never gone 390 to 17, so not sure abou that route.

To add to the previous post, 390 to 17/86 is also a good way to go. 390 has light traffic and great roads, and 17/86 is scenic, following the river, and there are a few rest stops along the way. The Roscoe Diner is a good place to stop for a bite to eat, if you're interested.

The rest stops along 390/17 are not gas station/convenience stores. At most of them, you'll find spacious grassy areas, rest room facilities, pay phones, and pleasant picnic areas. Or, you might rather stop at Wegman's, not far off the road in Corning, and near Binghamton.

I travel from a suburb just east of Rochester to Westchester and I have found the easiest/quickest to be the thruway East to 81 South to 17 East to 87 South to Tappan Zee Bridge. Route 17 is very pretty also.
