I read that public transport isn’t that great
Take the people mover at the PHX airport (free) to Washington St, then it's an at grade transfer to the light rail train that goes right downtown. Then the same train continues north to the heard Museum, and also the Art Museum. There's really nothing downtown of note. Way to the west on the far side of downtown is the old capitol turned into a museum of Arizona history, I think it's free but you can honestly miss it. There aren't any old buildings to speak of downtown, or even medium value sights, except the old capitol.
