I have been to both locations and have enjoyed my stay every time.

What are you looking for in weather? If it's mostly sunny then the Hyatt in Poipu is more likely to have better weather than Kapalua. Kapalua does seem to get morning and afternoon rainshowers quite often in comparison to other areas of Maui. But it usually doesn't last the entire day and tends to bring rainbows with it.

As far as the Ritz being haunted = I've never experienced anything creepy there in a long shot. The last set of renovations are completely worth the visit.

What I like best about Kapalua is feeling more isolated with the views of sea cliffs along the side of the beach versus looking down "hotel row" of Wailea tourists. I'm not totally knocking Wailea because I LOVE the Four Seasons there. For me it would be ideal to put the 4S in Kapalua (but rain never bothers me).

Good luck with your decision.

For me, I'd rather have the Ritz in Wailea.

Interesting read. I need help!!! My husband and I are going to Kauai and Maui In September 2009. The 10th to the 19th. We have picked the Grand Hyatt Club Level in Kauai and the Ritz Carlton Maui. I keep second guessing myself as to if I picked the right areas. Airfare already done! We are celebrating my 40th B'day and our anniversary. We do not have kids and ages of 56 and soon to be 40! Any suggestions on which resort first and to split 9 at the 2 properties. Also, is the weather nice at the ritz in Sept? We got a great deal at the Ritz. 5th night free so we have to do atleast 5 nights there, a car, Club level one night free and a $500 resort credit! Could not walk away even though I wanted to stay at the Four seasons in Wailea!! Thanks!!!!

We did Kauai first, enjoyed the natural flavor of the island, took a wonderful copter tour of the island and then did the Ritz... its a wonderful resort and kind of tough to leave every day for island exploring... if life was perfect the Ritz would be on Kauai so you could just stay there and just enjoy the resort... Because Maui has much more activity, you don't get to fully veg by the pool as much as you would like...

i was set on picking the four seasons over the ritz based on advice i got on this website but just found a much better deal at the ritz! has any one seen it since it was renovated or are the comments here based on the hotel prior to renovation? is the four seasons that much nicer even post renovations to the ritz? thanks all! i know you cant go wrong but its a big trip for us and want to get it perfect. btw - we are going in the beginning of august so if the weather is particularly rainy in that time (assuming its not but dont really know) i'd love your thoughts. thanks!!

On our trip in the Summer, the rains were quick downpours that refreshed and moved on... it wasn't like a daylong gloomy rainy day that we were used to in the lower 48... once it cleared, it was full speed ahead on our day...

mmama,
I have been since the renovation. Rooms are a bit nicer, especially the flooring. They made a few changes I didnt like at first(like the lobby), but they grew on me and actually thought it was a good change. But there were a few I that didnt grow, like closing off the terrace restaurant to an indoor restaurant only. In the past we loved the outdoor breakfast, so we found ourselves going out to other local eateries for breakfast.
