Glad to see I'm not the only one headed to "Nac-a-no-where!"

Instead of the usual homework, I assigned "Go pick up loose items and patio furniture from the back yard."

ilovetulips,

My cousin and her family in the Woodlands are getting out of town. Here's what she said:

"We shouldn't have any flooding here (We're 90 miles inland), but when Alicia came through as a cat. 3 hurricane in '83, The Woodlands sustained major tree damage and a week-long power outage."

I'd call the venue and see what their plans are for the concert.

Isn't Nacogdoches where pieces of the ill-fated Columbia Space Shuttle landed?

Best wishes to all those who will be affected.

Thanks Jocelyn,

I keep checking the Woodlands website so hopefully they will just cancel or postpone the concert. My mom and her husband live very close to the coast so she may need to stay with us in the Austin area. Mostly I want everyone to be safe and out of harms way.

On September 24, 19xx I was born in Houston. Now it looks like there will be a terrible hurricane on my birthday, in my birth city. This makes me sad.

However, my relatives in Houston have made their plans to come for a visit this weekend. We will not be able to go out to see the sights or do fun things because Austin could get as much as 15 inches of rain on Saturday. We will spend the evening at home and hope the power stays on.

But we will make the most of this bad situation, at least over the weekend. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, or in this case make hurricanes. We will have a combination birthday/hurricane party where we will serve hurricanes and 'ritas. This is not to dismiss the severity of what my family could be facing when they return to Houston. But in a way it feels good to spite Rita, even just for one night.

To all posters in Rita's way, please be safe, do not take unnecessary risks, and evacuate if you are told to do so. You will all be in my thoughts.

You know, starsville may have a point. Airlines have a way of not letting you know anything and keep you hanging there till the last minute. I am sure it would be much harder to leave the last minute if the airline decides to cancel the flight.

Keeping the rental and maybe driving to Dallas to pick up a flight might be an option.

Seetheworld, I hope everything turns out all right. My prayers are with you and everyone in that area.

Thanks, Simone. My input is based on my experience - not with hurricanes but with "just" tropical depressions that brought in high winds and rain.

The last time was in Jackson, MS. I had to stick around to do a presentation which would determine if my company could do business in the state for a full calendar year. I waited through the lunch break watching and listening to the wind buffet the hotel windows. When the group I was presenting to realized I was trying to make a flight out that day, they pleaded for me to just leave then and "get out of Dodge". I did my job, the co-worker's family member was waiting to rush me to the airport, I called the company's travel desk on the way to reserve a car, and when I got to the airport all flights had been cancelled. I literally got the last rental car and drove home from MS to GA.

If 300 people a day are planning to fly out of any airport on Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun, all 1200 are going to try to get out when an evacuation order comes in. There aren't going to seats on the plane - if the planes go. There aren't going to be rental cars available.

It happened in NO. Tourists were stuck. A Spanish government official received a private escort out of the Superdome. Folks paid $1000 for a taxi driver to drive them to Atlanta - and felt it was worth every penny.

I've never been in a hurricane - but I've had experience trying to get out of the way of one. If one waits, chances are slim they are going to get a seat on a plane and/or a rental car to drive home.

I hate that STW interprets my input as "flaming". I just want everyone safe and sound.

God bless all.

seetheworld - thanks for the post! I grew up in Houston & have memories of hurricane Carla (anyone else remember that one?) My Mom is in Tomball & I will encourage her to get out. Please, keep up the comments - we are in Colorado but have friends & relatives in the Houston area. Betsy

My great niece and her husband were just transferred to Houston from Louisville. They closed on their new home this past weekend and were headed there on Sunday. She always said she couldn't live in Florida with "all the hurricanes". I hope for the best for them and everyone else.

Meanwhile we've had some pretty strong gusts and downpours here in Naples this evening, on the northern fringes of Rita. Once again, we've missed -- oh how many close calls in the past two years!

Starsville, no worry.

My husband will not fly out of Hobby as planned (which only has two flights into NY) but rather Intercontinental (to Chicago or anywhere else, if necessary). He will not turn in his car until he collects his boarding pass.

He is not a novice traveler and has had his share of diversions (book close and blizzards have been my biggest worry - until now). This is becoming a bit more personal for him as he is having to leave behind many people he knows. They will all leave the area, but as we know things may not be the same upon their return.

By the way, the Marriott he's staying at is filled with children (unusual as it is usually filled with business travelers) and many hotel employees who have been relocated from NO. One man, this morning, asked where my husband was from and after chatting a bit, the man commented, "You know they call me a refugee, they call me a refugee" My husband had to swallow hard hearing that from this fellow.

Peace to all.

Landfall - between 2 and 4 am on Saturday morning west of Houston - per Al Roker on Today show just now.

It's a strong Category 4 now as was said above.

We're just barely in hurricane season and here comes another one. I heard that only 4 more pre-chosen names are still available from this season. We rarely even get to the "r's" and with two more months to go we are going to run out of names?! God bless all.

Well, if they run out of names, I guess we just can't have any more hurricanes, right?

"Well, if they run out of names, I guess we just can't have any more hurricanes, right?"

Funny you should ask that question. Just yesterday I was pointing out to my co-workers that I don't recall ever going this far into the alphabet. Then someone looked it up and found that there are no hurricanes with names beginning with X, Y, or Z, therefore we're almost out!! We learned that if we do run out of names, the next set of names will be letters of the Greek alphabet. Hurricane Alpha, Hurricane Beta, etc. God forbid.....
