Rhode Island vacation - summer?

Am planning an inexpensive 1 week vacation this summer (july) and a few people have told me to consider RI. I know all about Newport, but is there more than just that? Will it be easy to drive, etc? What to see? I will ignore the post that ALL northeasteners are rude and horrid,a nd give RI a try!
Joke.
Seriously, any tips for RI, or should I go elsewhere in NEw England?

Besides Newport, there are terrific beach areas in southern RI, known as South County.Lots of places to stay in Westerly, Watch Hill, Narragansett, and the surrounding areas. There are choices of beach, fishing ( great in the summer), clamming, or just being a tourist! You can hike in beautiful rural areas (Acadia) or you can take a ferry over to Block Island for a great day or more! You didn't say your likes or dislikes but these are just a few ideas. If I sound biased - I am! Rhode Island is a great state for summer travel!

I think RI in the summer would be great. I think RI is the best kept secret about New England. I should know - I went to school in RI and never visited any of the beaches there (other than Newport). My loss as I discovered a few years ago.

Narragansett and South County are really lovely. Newport was fun as a college kid and is really enjoyable now as a "mature" adult.Great restaurants (Asterix and Obelix)and bars. Mansions for sightseeing. Providence has Benefit Street, Wayland Sq and Thames St. Block Island is beautiful for biking. You are very close to Foxwoods if casinos are interesting to you.

But let me tell its the Rhode Islanders that have given the Neast the bad reputation for rudeness. It really is all their fault - everyone is Massachusetts is well mannered, smiling and polite all the time. Its those Rhodies you have to watch out for.

are you kidding? I can't tell. What is it about RI'ers that you find so rude? (Esp. considering about 1/2 the people working in Providence come from nearby towns from SE Mass.)...seriously though, I am interested in why you think that.

Ooops - all is forgiven. (see how polite people from Mass are). For a real laugh read the thread on relocating to the Northeast - major whining about we rude Bostonians and how back stabbing southerners are.

Another thumbs up for summer in RI. I am a DC native and work for a Congressman from RI and have been really enjoying getting to know RI over the past year. Especially in the summer, RI is an amazing relief from heat and humidity for me. Newport is gorgeous (I love the mansions), but East Greenwich, Narragansett, Westerly and other towns are also lovely and have great (less crowded) beaches. And Providence is a fantastic town that keeps getting better every year. Definitely check out Water Fire one evening in Providence. And the best thing is, all these things are about 20 minutes from eachother!

Hello, I'm glad to see that you want to discover all of what the beautiful state of RI has to offer & not just limit your self to just one location.

As a matter of fact there is a wonderful promotion going on in our state as we speak to promote mid-week travel to South County, which is the southern part of the state of RI.

South County,is one of New England's best loved family vacation spots. Last year it was voted as " One of the Top 12 vacation destinations in North America" by Money Magazine, this year there was a great write up in the May Edition of "Family Fun" talking about the best beaches to visit and vacation.
also, Yankee travel guide had a terrific article all about South County and it hiking, biking, kayaking etc... So what am I saying? Please visit this site hopefully it will give you some incentive to call or write for a planner.I called and received a wonderful planner you should too! Southcountyri.com

I love Rhode Island & South County, we are not rude people here, we treat people the same way they treat us.
