Returned from a weekend trip to NYC
Greetings fellow fodorites. I just wanted to post a short note about our trip to NYC. We live in Maryland and it takes us 4 hours to get to NYC.
We stayed at the Milford Plaza. Tony, an airline pilot, has stayed there several times with his crew. Although I read many negative postings about the M.P., we picked it because Tony had positive comments. I got a rate of $99/night through Expedia.com. We were in room #552, a corner room. It was very nice: Queen bed with table and tv., closet and a very small bathroom. I peeked in a couple of other rooms as we passed by and saw 2 double beds in them. Our room had more floor area being a corner room. The M.P. is an old hotel, but looks like it was renovated recently. The carpeting was quite new. Wall paper probably years old but in good condition. Firm bed.
I'm sure there are other hotels along the same line, but we liked it. The M.P. is in a very good location in the theatre district. The subway was right on the corner and two great restaurants are nearby, which we enjoyed: John's Pizzeria (260 W. 44th ST) and Carmine's (200 W. 44th ST).
We've been to NYC several times before and just wanted to walk around the area. We did visit the International Center of Photography. $9 to get in. There were 2 exhibits which were very interesting.
We also toured the Intrepid $14 (or $10 if retired/active military)(about a 15 minute walk from the hotel). There's a display about 9/11 along with their regular things to see: various military aircraft, flight simulators (extra fee), videos to watch, etc.
We had lunch at Kat's Delicatessen on the lower east side (205 E. Houston St). Excellent pastrami sandwiches and quite huge! The cheesecake was the best we've ever had!
Nearby we found one street (didn't get the name but off of Houston and the 2nd avenue F subway stop) filled with leather goods shops. Bought a faux Gucci bag for $20. Maybe I should have negotiated down, but thought $20 was a very good price.
We wandered through Chinatown and Little Italy Always great to be there and see all the great little food stands.
We had a couple of drinks each night at an Irish pub. One was on Restaurant Row, "O'Flaherty's." We were around 6pm, so it wasn't crowded. It was very nice because they didn't have their music so loud. We were able to talk without yelling.
Did a few other things before heading home in the snow.
Looking foward to going back in the fall!

One other comment about Katz': Tony asked the waitress, Terri, which was better, "the corned beef or ruben?"
She gave a firm, motherly reply, "Pastrami!" She was great. We chatted with her throughout our lunch as she stopped by to make sure we were enjoying her "suggestion."

Hi Judy, heres what we paid:
Johns Pizzeria: $11 for the small plus $2.50 per topping
Carmines: Plates averaged $20 (they have a web site); Cannoli $6
Kats Deli: about $10 for the Pastrami. I had ½ sandwich and chicken noodle soup for about $9.
Won Joe (23 W. 32nd St) Korean barbeque: Paid about $65 for the Bulgogi and Kalbi meat. Served with a variety of side dishes: kimchee, rice, pickled vegetables, a tasty dipping sauce, and lettuce leaves. We also had 2 bottles of sake. They also served crab, but we couldn't get the meat out. Needed a knife and the crab was covered in a sauce. Didn't want to mess with that.

Hi Monica...
Nice report!
About that crab...if it was covered in soy-sauce like stuff, it might of been something call "gweh-jang". The crab is raw (not as gross as it sounds) and you're supposed to crack it with your teeth and suck whatever you can out of it (Older Korean men seem to do this making all kinds of funky noises). Usually this is made with the small crabs, so if what you had seemed big (and cooked!) then it was probably cheap crab. ;-)

I believe the area where you bought the faux Gucci bag is the Orchard Street "Bargain District". Lots of good deals on leather products in that area and you can negotiate on price (in many shops it's almost expected). When the weather is good, on Sundays, they close off those two blocks to vehicular traffic and merchants (the area stores and also other vendors) have the streets filled with tables full of goods - lots of fun to wander through.

Mina, The crab was actually cooked. With the sauce on top I didn't want to bother with the messy fingers.
Yes, looking at my map, I see now that it was Orchid street. I didn't bargain for the purse, but I think $20 was fine. Will have to go back and shop some more!! But then again, I'm going to China in May, so I except to find some bargains there.
