Restaurants near Theatre in Houston

I'm looking for a good restaurant near the Theatre District in Houston. Possibly for lunch, but maybe for after the Saturday matinee. I'm not very knowledgeable about the area, so it will have to be something relatively close.

The Lancaster Hotel is right there and is very nice. It is a small, historic hotel with a great, quaint restaurant.

My husband and I always ate at Birraporetti's before shows at the Alley Theater. Birraporetti's is just downstairs from the Alley's parking garage. Not world class, but always pretty good.

We saw Vanessa Redgrave getting takeout there.

Let me add that it's been 5 years since we moved from Houston.

I like Benihana.....I THINK it's in the theatre district. I moved 9 years ago, but visit often.

Yes, Birraporetti's is still in the same spot downtown. Can't remember if that location or the one on West Gray has live music on Sundays, but worth looking into.
Another spot I would look into for lunch or Saturday matinee is the Angelika Cafe (inside the theater). It's in Bayou Place, one block west of Jones Hall. If the weather is nice you can sit on the patio and enjoy the only downtown view that isn't obstucted by construction. Food is good and the ambience is very 1940-50's theater, including a huge chandelier.

When we lived in Houston we enjoyed a place called Buco di Baci near the theatres. Less "chain" feeling than Biraporreti's. There is also now a Sambuca in the downtown area which serves good bistro type food. If you are willing to go a little bit - but not far- from the theatre district, try the Montrose area with its many good restaurants, such as Ruggles, Mark's, Sierra, Boulevard Bistro

i agree with the Montrose area: we've eaten at two terrific restaurants...Urbana and Aries. we're also going to soon to Cafe Annie which is supposed to be amazing. another suggestion is Mark's
