Resort in White Mtns of NH
Need a resort in White Mts. of New Hampshire. Looking for a wonderful, memorable place to stay while en route to Maine (from Stowe, VT). No bed and breakfasts please as we are traveling with 2 young boys. Trip is in October.

The Balsams in Dixville Notch, NH, is a wonderful place, for kids too. The food is outstanding, and one must dress for dinner (which my kids were not happy about before we went, but decided afterwards was "neat"). Reservations might be difficult to get, even this early. Well worth the trip and the expense.

I hope by now you've discovered the Mount Washington Hotel. It's an incredible grande dame of a resort, stunning at the foot of Mt. Washington. We actually stayed in the Bretton Woods Arms, part of the resort, but more reasonable. They have memorable mountain biking trails, horse and carriage rides, plus you and your boys can take the cog railroad to the top of Mt. Washington. Our nine-year old son loved it!

Agree wholeheartedly with above posts. The Balsams is extraordinary and the Mount Washington is splendid also. We have reservations at the Bretton Arms this fall as well. Another good place is the Franconia Inn in Franconia. Depending on the ages of your children, you may wish to check out Storyland in Glen, or Santa's Village in Jefferson. Stowe is our favorite place to visit in the fall! Be sure to check out the Trapp Family Lodge (of Sound of Music fame). Gorgeous setting.

Need Help!!
My husband and I are heading to New Hampshire in September. We are trying to decide between The Balsams and Mount Washington Hotel as our destination. Both look nice which makes the choice very difficult. Both have golf packages and both appear to be grand hotels. Any suggestions or recommendations?
