Residence Inn at the Federal Center

Hello everyone - I am traveling to DC in June with my older parents and 13 yr old niece. We'd love to find a suite in a central location. I heard that the new Residence Inn right at the Federal Center SW subway station was a nice place. But, I also heard there are very few restaurants nearby. I'd appreciate any info about this hotel and the area around it. Or any recommendation for other suite hotels. Thanks!

Terri, Though I haven't stayed at this particular hotel, I've never stayed in a Residence Inn that I wasn't truly pleased with. Love them! They have a good free breakfast buffet every morning, and free snacks with wine and beer Monday through Thursday. I think you get great value for your money, and the ones I've stayed in have always been immaculate! Have a great trip!

Haven't stayed there but it looks new and nice. The area is OK, it's just all-biz during the day and very, very dead at night.

But it's close to the Mall and especially the Indian Museum, which is worth a lunch visit for its diverse and tasty menu. Other than that and the national Gallery of Art, don't try to eat at any Mall museums.

If a bustling neighborhood with good dining around a suite hotel on top of a Metro is what you're after, the Chevy Chase Embassy Suites isn't a bad option. It's a ways out, but that the short Metro ride isn't a bad tradeoff for what you get there.

Another option is the Capitol Hill Suites. It's two blocks to the Capitol building and one block to Capitol South Metro station on the blue/orange line. The Library of Congress is right around the corner. It's in a nice, quiet, residential area. There are many restaurants within a few blocks in the area along Penn. Ave. between 2nd and 8th. Don't discount the taverns along that stretch as well - they're not just for drinking and have hearty, inexpensive menus.
