Renting a convertible for one-way coast run

Any suggestions for best deal on renting a convertible for drive north (S.D. to S.F.) over two weeks in August?? Needs to accomodate 4 plus luggage.

Hey Dave--

Before you worry about rentals, you might want to analyze where four people with luggage will fit in a convertible. If you could manage in, say, a Chrysler Sebring, you might be able to rent one. But I don't see a Miata in your future.

I've tried a mustang convertible with 4 people and luggage - not a good mix!

Several years ago we wanted to rent a convertible in San Diego and drop in San Francisco, but everybody we called (certainly all the major firms) would not rent a convertible with a drop off to another city. Maybe things have changed since then, but the only way you'll find out is to start calling the agencies and seeing if they will, and what they have. But don't expect much of a deal on a convertible -- they know that if someone wants one, they will be willing to pay a premium for it.

National Car Rental does have convertibles, and they do allow one-way rentals. (Check out the assortment of plates on one of their big lots!) Still, you'd need a Sebring in order to be able to fit 4 people and their stuff in the car. That's the only current big US-made convertible I am aware of.
