Reno getaway in early Nov.

We're thinking about a 3 day veterans weekend getaway in Reno, maybe a day drive to Tahoe. Would really welcome recommendations for nice hotel and any weather details for early Nov. Thanks!

Your post doesn't indicate whether you like to be on the "strip" or away - but if you want to be in the middle of the action the Eldorado or the Silver Legacy are a sure bet. Several hotels, including these two are connected via sky bridges, are packed with restaurants and pubs. As far as Tahoe I'm not sure - we haven't done much up there. If you stay at the Legacy or ElDorado - be sure to check out the martini lounge (live cabaret music and great drinks) and the Brews Brothers Pub - live rock on the weekends and good food and cold beer. As far as weather think - FREEZING - chances are it will be clear, dry and very cold.

The drive to Tahoe will be wonderful! There is so much to see - we did the drive all the way around the lake a few years ago in October - it was beautiful and so many neat lodges / pubs to stop in to for a java.

Enjoy

you'll have a car i gather from discussing the drive to Tahoe. Eldorado and Silver Legacy are nice. Stay away from Circus Circus. If at Eldorado also try the Bistro Roxy..a little on the expensive side but great food and service. Harrahs is also good and their steak house is wonderful...again on the high side. If you dont want to be down town...which is a mess to try to drive through right now because of the train trench, convention center construction and as always...road work...go further south on Virginia Street to either the Peppermill or the Atlantis. Both good places to stay and easy in and out from there to head up to the lake. Bring clothes to layer. It is NOT always freezing in Novenber and actually the last few years have had mild winters and we hardly EVER get snow down here anymore. Haven't had snow at either Thanksgiving or Christmas down here in the valley for many years. I don't think you can go really wrong with any of those hotels so see who has the best rate. Tahoe is beautiful in the fall so will be a nice drive for you. Have a nice trip.

I would second the suggestion of the Silver Legacy or Eldorado. While they have the typical casino floors, the skybridge level gives a break from the typical slot machine zoo and a chance to walk around a bit without worrying about a jacket. Other spots in the area worth visiting are Carson City (the history museum in the old mint is quite good), and Virginia City. In Reno, the Auto Museum is quite good.

There is the chance of snow in the mountains, so you will want to keep an eye on the forecasts as you get closer to the trip. The roads around Tahoe usually clear pretty quickly at that time of year, though.

I don't know if they'll be snow by then but, if not, they probably manufacture it. My favorite snowskiing memories are of Mount Rose, about 30 min. drive from Reno. Very beautiful! Slopes are gorgeous and varied and overlook the valley/towns below. I loved it! OSB.

We spent five days in Tahoe in July which was wonderful. We only drove around in Reno a bit so didn't see much but from what we saw we were certainly not impressed. If you are a gambler, that may be the big draw but not sure what else is around and the downtown is certainly shabby looking. Looked like several nice, large hotels with casinos but for me, I wouldn't stray from the hotel.
