Don't know if you've heard of or read the book "Places Rated Almanac", but if not, it's a good place to start to get an idea which area in the US you would like living in. It rates metro areas in categories like climate, job growth, employment, education, transportation, crime, etc. I would HIGHLY recommend looking at this publication before making a decision.

As for myself, I lived in Wisconsin in a small town called Chippewa Falls (home of Leinenkugels Beer, Chippewa Spring Water and the town Jack Dawson mentioned while on the bow of the ship in "Titanic") for the first 24 years of my life. It is about 7 miles from Eau Claire, which is one of the metro areas covered in "Places Rated".

For the past 15 years, I have lived in Minneapolis MN. Very nice city. High standard of living. LOTS of employment opportunities (employers are BEGGING for people to fill positions that are open). Nice people. Lots of culture. Lots of lakes. BUT, winters can be brutal here. There have been many days in past winters when the temps fell far below zero, with windchills anywhere from 20 - 50 below. But, spring and fall are beautiful here and summer is very nice (but WAY too short). Hope this gives you a few more ideas about some possible places to move to. But again, I highly recommend looking at the above book I mentioned. Best of luck to you and your family.
