Hi Nancy - it really matters where you'll be working when looking at these neighborhoods. I live in Cobble Hill and commute to the financial district every morning. I live in a beautiful (but small) 1 bedroom apartment that I pay $1,700 per month for. My commute is about 25 minutes to Wall Street, and the surrounding area is stunning, with lots of restaurants, great shopping, and fun bars. Most of my neighbors are either families with small children or other young singles in their 20s and 30s. Washington Heights, Astoria, Long Island City are all good options if you'll be working in midtown.

One HUGE caveat w/ Hoboken is the PATH situation. For those nights when you absolutely don't feel like waiting for the PATH, or getting to a PATH station, a cab to Hoboken from Manhattan will run you at least $40-$50. A cab to Brooklyn from downtown Manhattan will be $15 or less. Good luck!

If you'd like to live in midtown manhattan (east side) you can try tudor city. The apartments tend to be small but the area is amazing. There are 2 parks in tudor city and stunning views of the United Nations. There are lots of great restaurants, things to do. You can just step out your door and walk around. We used to walk to the 5th Ave shops all the time. Times Square too.

The buildings there are pre-war and gorgeous and they have doormen. The area is incredibly safe. When we rented there 2 years ago we paid about 1400 for a studio so you should be able to find something in your price range.
